Starting Atkins but question

Hello all,

I am not new to the forum, but this is my first post. I am 5'10" 175lbs and I am thinking I am around 20%BF. I have been down to 13%, but life problems set me back. I seem to jump between 160 and 185 regularly, but I just can't seem to get all the fat off.

I am now ready to take it off and keep it off. I have been slowly cutting my carbs over the last couple of weeks, but have been keeping the fat down as well. I think I was around 30%carbs/40%protien/20%fat, but I was just trying to cut carbs and fats to get ready for a real diet.

I just started the Atkins on Thursday and started keeping close track of all my stuff Saturday because I was a little worried about the fat. Now, I looked at everything and I took in a lot more fat than I wanted to.

According to Atkins you can take in as much fat as you want, but it looks pretty scetchy to me. I got 87g protein/19g carbs/99g fat. That fat scares the shit out of me.

I am eating 3 meals and 3 either shakes or bars in between meals, but I am guessing that my fat intake is too much. What does everyone think?? I work nights so my meal schedule is a little messed up right now.

midnight-hotdog with sauekraut

3am-Protein shake

3:30am-WORKOUT

5am-protein bar

8am-2 bratworst with sauekraut

5pm-pork roast with grilled onions, bell pepper and mushrooms. Not a lot of veggies though, just to add to the taste. chopped pork and grilled all together.

8pm-protein shake

start next day

Now I know the Hotdog and Brat is what killed me so I am going to get rid of that and substitue with grilled chicken and green veggies, but other than that how does the diet look. Please remember that the 5pm meal is like my breakfast. I am also going to change the 3am shake to can of tuna fish and a little something with it.

I am also taking a moderate amount of Ripped Fuel (3-4 a day) to keep my energy level up. Have to take something, I work nights.

It's important to keep you fat high. Don't worry about it.

when i did keto i had my fat around 100g a day....and the weight melted off.

Thx. being on diets before got my mind trained to not like FAT!!! It's just scaring me a little. Do you think I should Substitute the fatty Brats with something like chicken??

Yeah man, don't worry about that. You reall yaren't taking in that much fat if your on the Induction Phase. I probably ate upwards of 120 grams of fat, and around 2800 calories or so.

I know it seems really, really weird, but you'll be fine man

Personally, I felt like shit when I was eating lots of animal fats and saturated fats. I am still on a keto type diet, but I have substituted the bad fat for good fat.

I know it's not supposed to matter on Atkins, but I just feel much better after cutting out most of the animal fat. I still eat lots of fat, like 100gm, but it's mostly olive oil, flax, and peanut butter. The weight is coming off like crazy. I eat lots of lean protein, like chicken breasts, salmon, tuna, lean ground sirloin. I eat spinach salads with 4-5 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil and vinegar.

I'll post my whole plan if you are interested. I went from 280lbs to 210 and I am still going.

Yes, I am interested. How long did it take you to lose the 70lbs?? Just curious.

Very impressive results by the way.

THX

Also, when you are around 100g of fat how much protein where you taking in??

Do not worry about fat...I went thru this diet a while ago and I was tinkering with the percentages and fats till I found out how important is to eat GOOD FATS... I did this to find out for myself if it really works and also to motivate my wife(we both did it in the same time). So i can speak from my own experience!

If you scrool down you may find a post of mine about good fats and bad fats.

Yor carbs are Ok.In terms of good fats you need Omega 3s and 6s so your body can make 2 hormon like substances(EICOSANOID and PROSTGLANDIN) which are important for controling blood pressure, body temperature and regulating inflamation, sweeling and pain. By all means avoid the trans fats and hydorgenated food.

Do this and you will succeed..

Here's the loophole with Atkins. Yeah, its true that you don't have to monitor what you eat other than carbs, but the reason why is because most people are going to be satisfied more easily on a low carb diet than a low fat in terms of hunger. I started paying attention to what i was eating and even now i still come to about 2000-2500 calories a day and i'm never hungry.

Also, the more weight you have to lose the faster it will come off. I was 285 in June and now i'm 198. I probably lost 60lbs in 4 months and since then its progressively slowed to about half a pound to a pound every week/ week and a half and i'm very happy with that. The diet is painless and i don't feel like i'm missing out.

I'm one of the lucky ones i guess because greasy foods don't seem to bother me like they used to. Hey, my cholesterol is 130 and i eat bacon and eggs <--cooked in bacon grease almost every morning for breakfast. On the days i eat more vegtables than usual, i just curb back my fat by eating chicken or tuna, or i leave mayo off of my steak/beef.

I'll tell you this, i've had lots of times where i've plateued BAD and almost switched diets to something else but i decided to stick it out with Atkins and do the recommended steps in curbing particular food items i eat, and i pick back up everytime.

Don't get discouraged. For a LOT of people, if they'll just follow the diet, it will work for them.

Thanks alot everyone. I am only looking at loosing around 20 -25 pounds so I don't think I will go long term with the complete diet.

After I loose most of the extra fat I am going to start to build muscle and probably get back up to around 160-165 instead of my diet goal of 150-155. I am more worried about burning the extra fat for the summer and than start more of a slow building diet. I am in no way a fitness fanatic, but I really enjoy knowing what I need to do to get to where I want.

Thanks again everyone

atkins freakin works

Dude the atkins works big time as I have several family members who stuck to the program and shed the pounds and inches. it works trust me. Don't worry about the fat just the carbs.

Hit the tuna too. Excellent protein sorce with almost zero fat. Good luck

what happens after someone gets off the atkins diet? if they start taking in more carbs. itsnt it true that the body will blow up with weight?

You don't ever go "off" the Atkins Diet. Atkins is a low carb lifestyle. Most people usually end up consuming about 100-120 grams of carbs for the rest of their lives. Like ANY diet, if you go "off" it and start eating like you used to, your going to obviously gain the weight back. Don't blame the diet, blame the lack of disipline in falling back into old eating habits.

What made you fat to begin with is still capable of doing it again.

Another question about the diet. I have been sticking to under 20grams of carbs a day. How much protein should I be taking in??

I am also taking Ripped Fuel for energy, I work nights, and I was wondering if I should be doing some cardio with my workouts.

Thanks for all the previous comments by the way.

I am interested in hearing your plan! I just completed the two week induction phase, and am dissappointed with the results. My diet is very lo-carb anyways. WHat are you doing exactly that is "melting" the weight off. I am 5'5, 133, female. Are you drinking any alcohol?

The adkins diet is a scam- to put it simple- the body cannot enter fat metabolism without the end product of glucose (carbs) you want to lose fat, make 55% of your diet carbs, do resistance training, and aerobic training, and have good genetics

Some of us don't have good genetics. Don't you understand that??? 55% carbs is absolutley crazy under anything but a bulking diet.

I have tried the high carb low fat diet and guess what, NO RESULTS. Maybe 5 pounds in 2 months. I have lost that already during the induction period of the Atkins.

The Atkins diet might not be the best diet, but it is good for losing weight fast. Results don't lie!! There are a lot of people out there that use a low carb diet to cut including a lot of the body builders. I don't see how so many people can be wrong

Keep, your fat intake above protein intake and you'll be fine. Remember that the key is to fall into ketosis. Protein has a glycogenic effect. Because of this, excess protein can prevent your body from entering/staying in Ketosis.

Also, if your not getting good results you might want to cut out the ripped fuel although i'm not sure what all is in it. Read the ingredents more than the labels. I personally use Atkin's Protein Shakes on occasion but only out of convience, not because its "better".

The key on induction is to not have caffiene or drink ANYTHING other than water. Keep yourself strickt the first 2 weeks. It only gets easier from there.

Hell, i've been doing this since June and i've lost almost 90lbs so it definately works and its not a "scam". I'm in excellent shape (and thats from my Doctor, not based on how i feel). You will not eat yourself into a heart attack or feed off of muscle. My cholesterol is 130 which is extremely good for someone who is predisposed to high cholesterol, heart disease, and diabeties (once again, from the doctors mouth).

People who don't "believe" in the diet can talk all they want. I have doctors reports to SLAM them wrong ;). Just remember, its not a body building diet, its a fat loss diet.
