New member
Just spent a week at my local hosp for a staph infection, in my left ass cheek, don't know how i got it. But it really kick the shit out of me, 104.5 temp, left ass swelled up to double it's size, but the pain was the worst i have had in a long time, they had me on 3strongest antibiotics you can get.

is usually warm to touch, painful, red, high fever, feel like there's a lump or knot

were you prescribed to vancomycin? do they characterized it as mra staph infection.

yeah kinda weird, It said the last activity is July 11th

He's probably more like resting and taking his antibiotics. If he's in antibiotics He's hook up on some Iv, He had mentiond three. Those stuff knock you down, I bet one that he's taking is vancomycin ( strongest antibiotics for staph infection) You have to take that every 12 hrs for the vanco and some are every 8 hrs. It takes likes 4 weeks to recover or 2 weeks less.

I wish him luck!! Hopefully everything is well! People can recover from it but rarely it can come back later. Pretty scary!

Staph infection you can pretty much get it anywhere. :worried:

Methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA, pronounced "mer-sa") are becoming common in the community.

I suspect given the location of this, that the guy either had an ingrown hair/boil that lead to the infection, or was injecting himself with dirty needles.

The hospital I used to work for currently has two VRSA patiets. Staff was the #1 killer before, and it has reasonable expectations to be again. Any needle user's out their should take note - your life is not worth a .15 pin. Use new, sterile, disposable ones, or clean them properly before and after each use. (I do not advocate reusing needles, but if you do, take the precautions).

above all, be safe and protect yourself

I've had several friends contract staph infections in hospitals. In one case, the woman almost died; she got it after a radical mastectomy.

It's an epidemic problem and some hospitals are worse than others. The interesting thing is that European hospitals have reduced staph infections to next to zero. The American Hospital Association refuses to adopt the same standards because it says they would be "too costly."

They involve simple things like requiring nurses to put on a gown before entering the room, washing their hands, etc.

What Is a Staph Infection?
Staph is the shortened name for Staphylococcus (pronounced: staf-uh-low-kah-kus), a type of bacteria. These bacteria can live harmlessly on many skin surfaces, especially around the nose, mouth, genitals, and anus. But when the skin is punctured or broken for any reason, staph bacteria can enter the wound and cause an infection.

There are more than 30 species in the staph family of bacteria, and they can cause different kinds of illnesses — for example, one kind of staph can cause urinary tract infections. But most staph infections are caused by the species Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus).

Anyone who has a boil that ruptures and is hot and painful usually has a staph infection. Community Acquired MRSA is a big problem, its everywhere and people don't realize how dangerous MRSA can actually be if it gets out of hand.

VRSA is Vancomycin Resistent Staph.
\
As UsaPitBullz said, MRSA has become fairly common, and is becoming a very serious health issue for some communities. VRSA takes it one step further. Vancomycin is one of the strongest Antibiotics on the market, and has, until recently, been last antibiotic available for resistant bacteria. VRSA is staph evo lved so that Vancomycin will not kill it... Very very very scary stuff.

At this point, their is another antibiotic called beta-lactam that can treat VRSA. Much like with Vancomycin, their are strains resistant to beta-lactam. Thankfully, their are not any strains (yet) resistent to both. It is only a matter of time though.

I'm a cancer survivor and when my white blood cell count got low enough (such that I was much like an AIDS patient) I could get some bad ass staph infections.

I'd have to be on IV vanco for days. Never had the pleasure of MRSA but after my experiences with infections I'd have to say, um, NEVER (please) RE-USE NEEDLES.

If you have the money to buy gear you have the money to buy clean needles. Por favor. Think of your mothers.

No i didn't die, sorry i never responded to any questions, the doctors and myself weren't sure how i got, could of been a ingrown hair, bit by a mosq. and know i didn't injet myself with a dirty needle you putz. what happened i got out of the hosp. and develop a nasty cough, it turned out i ended up with walking pneumonia.

First off, staph is very serious, it can kill you if you do not address it. Second, I had a staph infection in my shoulder from a shot of winn. I could not lift my arm, warm to touch, 103 fever, night sweats, etc. Went to doctor, and he lanced my arm with a one inch incision. The shit that came out of my arm would make you sick. He took 60 cc's of puss and fluid out of my arm. Then because of the staph, you have to pack the wound for one week to ensure it does not return. He prescribed Cyparo. Staph is all over you skin, thats why it is so important to use alcohol swabs for injection site. For those who don't, you are only setting yourself up for the inevatable. It will happen eventually. So, sorry bro. I know how you feel....Staph is very serious.

I heard through friends that this guy we know re-used a needle because he was out of them and he was going on a last-minute vacation and wanted to look good... really stupid on both counts, but anyway... needless to say, he was rushed to the hospital while on his trip because of a staph infection, high fever...huge hole in his ass... why risk all that?

Also, it seems that staph infections can even be caught at the gym?

I don't see how unless the person went to the gym with open sores... Why not just wear bandaids over the sores and sweats or baggy shirts? Wash hands and wrists. Also gym's provide cleaners to spray on gym machines after use. There is alot one can do to stop the spread of germs.

As far as symptoms , I'm sure that varies from person to person and what specifically happens to one person is not important. The hole in ones bodypart due to the unsterile injection is the main thing

therott, I do not know if the putz comment was directed at me or not, but I did not mean to imply you used a dirty needle. My comment about using a clean, sterile needle was meant to be generalized for anyone reading this topic.

Staph is everywhere, and on everything. A small scratch, bite, or any opening on the skin can become infected. I would hazard that the gym is a hotbed for any number of germs, including staph. Easiest way to avoid catching most bugs is to stay clean - wash your hands, keeps cuts and other irritations clean and dry.
