I stood in line to get the cd on the day it came out.
I'd been hearing the title track for a week a thought it was average.
I got the cd (which also contains a DVD of the the band performing all 11 songs in rehearsal) and listened to it while getting ready for work.
I found it hard, at first, to distinguish one song from another. Very similar sounds from song to song. I , being a shred guitar player myself, was totally disappointed with the lack of ANY guitar solos on the cd.
Needless to say, I thought the cd was one big disappointment.
I then decided to REALLY listen to the cd over the next couple of days. I have found a depth and individuality to each song that I had previously not noticed. There are some very good songs on this cd. I found myself drawn into the songs in a way which I haven't been in a long time. I believe the structure and dynamics work well with the lyric to get their point across.
The production values I'm not happy with, but I can live with that. Overall, though, I am impressed with this cd. I am sure it was very cathartic of Hetfield to thrash out like this without having to be restrained by playing as technical as previous efforts, and just friggen' ROCK OUT.
Good show boyz
Just a side note: Anyone know if those are James' 2 children at the start of the DVD while he spraypaint's the wall?
