Squats

Hey guys ive been neglecting doing squats in my routine but from reading so much here have have realised im an idiot and they are the cornerstone for leg/llower back and core growth.

So anyway ive started doing them, i started on 40kgs the other day (dont laugh) to get my technique right....been reading the stickies on squats. Last night i did 3 sets/10rep of 60kg and couldnt finish the last set as i could feel my left hammie really tightening up about 4 reps in.

i was stretching between sets etc but have pulled up really sore this morning. Should i drop the weight back a bit and push through this? Or warm up a bit more on a higher weight then attack the 60kg's?

I gotta get good at squats! :mix:

keep plugging away. you'll never regret doing squats for 10 years plus. don't train if you are so sore you can't sit. a little tenderness is ok....

Yeah i can sit just a bit stiff and sore walking to work this morning. When is it time to step up in weight? Obviously when i can do say 10-12 of that particular weight?

there's a great routine involving 20 rep squats, which requires you to increase the weight 5lbs. each workout......check out some of Blut Wump's stuff. he trained squats for reps for some time, made nice progress if i remember correctly......

I took 3 weeks off of working out to travel and i haven't taken a week off in a year. I hit it hard on legs the first day back and i couldn't even sit yesterday or today. I got my friend who works at the gym i go to to stretch me out and i will probably hit legs up again on saturday. I haven't stretched a whole lot since summer and i realize that i had just spent the last four months slowly tightening up and then with my cramped travel conditions and time off i tightened up even more. Try doing a good stretch for the next week and you should be able to hit squats hard.

I was in the same position as you a while ago where I didn't do squats. The first day I did them I became so sore the next day I thought I had injured myself. The soreness went away, and Ive been doing them ever since and Ive never felt faster, and stronger my entire life. Every sport I am involved in has been enhanced in coordination, speed, strength and endurance. Keep em' up, heres a good link on how to them correctly along with all sorts of other lifts that help with core development: http://www.aceathlete.com/hatch/video.htm

Just scroll on the right side of the page through all the different exercises.

When going to the gym to squat leave your ego at the door. I see a lot of guys 1/4 squating 315+ that would probably never make it out of the whole on a ass to calve 225. Just focus on your form and squating deep. Pay your dues with the lighter weights and you will be hitting some big numbers for some DEEP reps before long. I would also do them first thing in the week. Only dorks bench on Monday.
