SQL SERVER vs. ORACLE

If you had a choice in receiving training in either of these, which would you prefer?

Keep in mind that the guidelines for casting your votes are:

** The FUTURE use in the market. Is it going to be around for a while.

** The ease of learning. Is it very difficult or complex? I understand that Oracle can make you pull your hair out at times.

** How easy it is to get employment after receiving training.


My friend is wondering about this as he wants to make a upward move. He already has the MOUS (pretty worthless) and has been an admin assistant for several years now.

Oracle is more popular throughout the industry. Oracle can run on multiple OS's and platforms, SQL server is a microsoft only product. Neither are going anywhere, but since more shops use oracle your chances of getting hired are greater.

Both are pretty complex, the more you know the more you can do. I'm not a DB guy and but for some it's easy. I guess if you have constant exposure it'll get easier.

Getting employed? It depends on a lot of things, how much competition there is in the job market, how his resume looks, the level of competency they need for their DB guy. Chances are that if they want him to manage very critical databases and all he has is a certification, they probably wont hire him.
