if i am not sore the day after a workout does that mean that i didn't work that muscle group hard enough. If i do heavy deads my traps and all of my upper back is just done, i mean really really sore, does that mean i over worked my back. Or is it good that i am that sore??
Depends how your split works. If it is still sore by the time you have to work that area again than i would say you over worked it. There is nothing wrong with soreness as long it is mucle soreness.
Once a muscle group gets used to a particular excercise, it's less likely to be sore the next day. But that dosn't mean you didn't work it hard enough. It might just be an indicator that it's time for a change in your workout.
Don't depend on DOMS as an indicator of growth. DOMS more or less accompanies exercise stimuli that the body is not accustomed to. This could be anything. Routine change, change in intensity, change in training volume, new exercise, shorter rest periods, etc.
Too many variables here to equate it and hypertrophy.
I know that soreness is not necessarily an indicator of hypertrophy. I'm not suggesting that it is. I'm just saying that it might be one possible indicator that a change in workout might be in order.
Personally, regardless of it's correlation to hypertrophy, I feel better if I'm sore as opposed to not being sore. It' mostly psychological I'm sure, but I still feel like I've done more, so I understand where the original question is coming from.
