The Wind Up Bird - This
Sample straight from a breakup on voicemail. "Sorry I've become this monster, I love you a lot," repeats while oppressive distortion and audio glitches rage creating an absolutely gut wrenching listen of heartbreaking pain.
Esmerine - There Were No Footprints in the Dust...
This track built around cello is the musical embodiment of being swallowed up in loneliness. There's something so undeniably beautiful about the gentle melancholy on display.
Cult of Luna - Crossing Over
This song's second half is still one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard evoking a far different reaction than the first two songs here but with the same outcome, misty eyes. Delayed guitars, heartfelt vocals, and a sparse production never sounded so good.
.Hopesfall. - The Broken Heart of a Traitor
While this band would go on to toy around with spacey compositions and later generic popcore ala This Day Forward, they once were a violent hardcore band bent on releasing all their frustration into cathartic bursts and screamo-esque soft interludes. The Broken Heart of a Traitor shows the band in full force and the finale is as powerful as music gets. With a simple repeating riff that builds into a destructive distorted onslaught, dual vocals pour out their hearts. It's urgent and immediate; it's the sound of true passion.
