Sometimes you don't adopt the dog...

TheProject

Sometimes, the dog adopts you.

I came home from dinner, and this pup comes running up to me, just as friendly as could be. He tried to get into my parents' car, so I distracted him from that, and he followed me up to the porch.

I thought about it for about five minutes, then decided to let him in.

He doesn't have a name yet...I've gotten Poochie, Magnus, and Deputy Dog for suggestions...I like Magnus.

I haven't had a puppy since I was 14...can't even remember how long it takes to potty train a dog.

OMFG what a cute pup. What kind is it?

I am looking to getting a new dog atm.

Yeah, he's a cute dog...no idea what kind he is. If anyone's able to tell, enlighten me.

Spatts thinks he's part beagle, part weimaraner.

I dunno.

He's so damn cute hun! Good luck with the potty training! It'll definitely make for an interesting experience. ;)

Like everyone else has said, that's a CUTE dog! It does look part weimeraner (does anyone know how to spell that name?) and part beagle. But the length of its body almost looks part bird dog (don't know the actual name, and I'm a hick...so it's bird dog to me). A few months ago some ASSHOLE just dumped off three australian shepherd puppies that were cute as hell in the parking lot of my girlfriends' on campus apartments. This was on a Friday and no one would take them. So there's a really well done pet adoption agency that we took them to that following Monday. Now, notice the timespan of Friday to Monday? Long enough to get attached. I've already got a dog and don't have any room for another one, she's got on campus housing...so no pets. But we got attached to them QUICK. So laugh if you must, I was torn up when we had to take them there. I hadn't felt that shitty in a long time.

Yes looks like a Weimaraner or a German short hair or Pointer mix, polish pointer etc! Defiantly a hunting dog! Does he have webbed feet? Docked or regular tail? If you get a chance post a better pic! Better light etc!

I like the first pic, even if you can't tell anything from it.

Don't know if the second pic tells you anything or not.

:D

You might wanna check around and see if someone recently lost their dog....I mean, it could be that someone just bought/adopted that dog and it got away from them somehow.

It is a cute dog though :)

Yeah, I intend to check around and see. I'd hate to think that some poor kid lost his dog.

He's all skin and bone, has fleas, and no collar, so I think he's probably been out of home for a whle.

Is it just me or does that pooch look quite patronized. I really hope project isn’t endlessly hitting some of his transformer inspired posing routines because I don’t think that seeing project greased up in a pair of undersized pink trunks is good for the animals mental stability, or anyone’s for that matter.

oh ok, I couldn't tell that from the pic...I guess he was just a poor homeless dog.

If that happened to me I'm pretty sure I'd do the same thing you're doing...or if I couldn't keep it I'd at least take it to a shelter or something.

ok it's official...that dog is hella cute

you should keep him and make him the asylum mascot. tell hannibal's dog that his services are no longer needed as he's just been out-cuted.

Project, you're a good man to take in the puppy. Not many things tug at my heartstrings more than unwanted animals being abandoned or mistreated. :(

I'm going to go huggle my dog now.

he looks part german shepard

yeah, the big floppy ears and coloring. Spread his paw out, if it is webbed, that indicates that it is made to swim (usually). I have lots of Labrador Retrievers in my family and they all have the webbed paw action going on...and boy do they love to swim in the pool.

spatts, that Chesapeake Bay Retriever is gorgeous! Somehow, that just doesn't look like Magnus...he looks like a shepard/rott/possibly lab mix? The paws and coloring take on the Rottweiler side...longer nose and floppy ears (for now) indicate german shepard...and lab because he looks friendly, approachable, and that is a very common look for lab mixes. I have a chocolate lab mix (Kahlua) who has longer and softer hair than a pure breed lab. I think he may have some springer spaniel or pointer in him...he loves birds!

Try telling us about his personality...I'm sure you've got lots of stories by now!

it's a song...at least that's what I'm told. it just feels good to say it out loud!

hey, check out his hair too...tell us if it is coarse, etcetera. Updated pictures are sure to get you karma on this one!:D

A lot of stray mutts are part german shephard, and he looks it. Verrry cute!

Some advice on the house training: it shouldn't take all that long. Whenever he starts circling or sniffing the ground take him outside pronto. If you catch him peeing indoors, yell no and then take him right outside that instant, and be sure to praise him when he does his business. Doggies love to be praised and hate to be yelled at, and he should get the hint pretty quick. I have a german shephard, and it took me under a week to house train her. She had accidents every now and then at first, of course, but that was mainly because she was a puppy and she couldn't hold it very long.

More dog advice: Do not say his name when you're yelling at him, because he will begin to associate his name with getting yelled at and disappointing you and therefore be reluctant to come when called. Also, yell at him only when actually catching him in the act of doing something wrong, at the instant he's doing it, otherwise he won't associate the scolding with the behavior.

And I heard that dogs respond best to 2 syllable names. SO I vote for Magnus.

:)

Nonerz, I don't have any stories yet. Last night was his first night in the house. He ran around like crazy, bounced everywhere, sniffed everything, barked at the cats, and was generally a puppy.

When I was a kid, we had a Shepherd/Doberman mix that Magnus reminds me of. Spatts' neighbors have a golden retriever, and the texture of the fur is very similar to that, except perhaps a little more coarse. I haven't checked the feet yet for webbing.

I had some old food left from my last dog. I'd just never quite gotten around to throwing it out. It wasn't puppy chow, but he ate a big bowl of that, and I left some puppy chow out for him this morning. He drank a bunch of water too....surprised me that he was that thirsty with all the rainwater outside.

I had a Keeshond for 13 years...absolutely wonderful dog. I raised him from a pup, and losing him was very, very hard. I couldn't even tell anyone I was taking him to have him put down because I just couldn't get the words out without breaking down. I lost him about 2 years ago, and have just recently been looking at trying to rescue an older Keesh and a puppy. With my job situation, I was going to wait until I had that squared away before adopting a dog. That said...I don't mind that he got here a little early.

Well you are pasty white like Steve Martin...just fits..thats all.

That's a very nasty song, young lady! ;)

maybe that's why nate sings it to me...just that part though (I've never heard it for myself).

Back to Magnus...I like the name too...the trainer for the obedience class I took Kahlua to suggested Nature's Miracle, which has an enzyme in the mix to take the scent out of the pee stain, which prompts the puppies to re-mark their spot. For chewing things he's not supposed to, Bitter Apple Spray is pretty dependable.

...he's soooooooo cute!:D

Cute pup.

Please protect his innocence by not inviting beastboy over.

Damn, Look at the size of his feet....
Looks like part Beagle because of the very small black part of its nose. That's a beagle trait.

The other part may be any one of the hound types.
Wi, pointer, bloodhound...

He's gonna dump huge piles in your house if you don't work on
getting him house broken. I know that..

I've always liked the name HOOTCH after seeing the movie with tom hanks.

THIS, IS NOT YOUR ROOM.....

I think he looks like a Pointer/Shepard mix.

I agree! After looking at the new picks he has Shepherd marking! Most likely German shepherd and Pointer! Those Shepards like German Shepherds/Belgium Teravans are the number one sperm donors in the dog world! They can jump over just about any fence to get to the bitches! They are the Mack Daddies of the Dog World! Those feet look like Belgium Teravans feet! So my final guess is Pointer/Belgium Teravan mix!

Who COULD say, "No" to a face like that? I'm talking about the puppy not you..hehehe

How damn cute! He looks kinda like a "Hoss" to me...He's got some big paws to grow into as well.

Has this dog seen his masters new self unloading Dishwasher ?
He will be impressed, yes he will...

Next Project will be a dog house huh ?

Man, it has been a long time since I've had a dog.

Upon seeing him initially, my mother made the comment that she thought he was an "altered" male. I hadn't looked, but come to find out...he's a she.

This is one of those times when it would pay to have a meatgazer like beastboy or Bullit around, I guess.

So, Magnus is now Maggie, and she's clean and free of fleas. Hopefully.

You've proven my point...you couldn't even recognize a cooter if it stared you in the face.

Yeah, well, I don't have the experience hunting for canine cooter that you do.

PUPPY-6.JPG

Here are a couple of pics of German Shepherd Puppies and adult dogs, I would say she might have some traces of GS. By any means if she is part GS she is sure to make a remarkable pet and protector.

A really sad bump....

I came home tonight after running an errand to let the dog inside, give him some food, and put him in his crate. I went to let him in, and noticed the gate had been opened. I'm not sure who opened it, but the dog was long gone. I talked to one of my neighbors, and he said the gate had been open as long as he'd been home.

I went inside, and noticed there was a message on the machine. Unfortunately, it was a call from one of my neighbors, letting me know that Magnus had been hit by a car in front of their house.

From what I understand, he was killed instantly, so at least he didn't suffer.

He was rambunctious, he destroyed stuff, chewed on anything he could, made the occasional mess on the floor...but he was my dog, and I'm going to miss him.

:(

Whoa.. shitty!

Sorry to hear that.

:(

this is terrible, project. very sorry to hear it. hope you feel better soon. glad you got some time with him, at least.

:(

Reading this thread for the first time is like watching a tragic movie. So sorry for your loss, Project.

Project;

Very sorry for your loss. :(

Take comfort in knowing you gave him the best gift a man can give his pet; love.

Mankind could learn a lot about love and loyalty from a dog.

Thanks everyone....

I told spatts this morning that I was getting ready for work, and saw one of his rawhide bones on the floor...there are several little reminders like that around the house that make it kinda tough.

Just gonna take me a little time...

I still haven't figured out what to tell you on this one. I wish I knew. However, I do agree with Spatts on this one. He's probably hanging out with Buddy, and saying, "Damn, it didn't get much better than that." :)

We have 2 pain in the ass Chihuahuas that would cause my family much grief to lose..

Give yourself a bit of time, and then get a new pup from the pound.

It helps.

Aloha-Kona.jpg

Damn...my sister lost her dog last year in a hit and run type incident. It happened in a dead end where a lot of people take their dogs for a walk. Kona was an expert with the tennis ball...she was hit by a van that came barreling in the dead end...the driver hit her and didn't do so much as to even slow down afterwards. He screeched around and took off like a mad man.

One of the neighbors (who we didn't even really know) came out and offered to take drive her to the vet. She was barely alive...broken jaw, lots of blood.

Despite the efforts of the vet, Kona passed away later that night. At least our family got to say good bye to her before she died. She was only 2 years old...and one of two of our very first family dogs.

My family was totally devestated...this dog was our baby! Bo (my parents dog) and her were siblings and they became the center of the household...Bo still is! I can totally relate to your feeling of loss and my sister still cries when she talks about Kona. I remember telling her that Kona had the best 2 years a dog could ask for...my sister gave her a great home and lots of love.

We surprised her with Sadie, a very affectiate dog, about 4 months later. I think having Sadie has really helped her...not that she replaces Kona, but has filled the void that my sister was feeling.

Anyway, thought I'd share because I know that it isn't an easy thing to go through when you're very attached to your dogs.

Project,

I'm so sorry to hear about that. This poem really helped me with the loss of my dog about 7 years ago and then again about a month ago:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

There are many things that still remind me of my little girl that I had to recently put down. One is she is in our engagement picture that is hanging on the wall in my living room. Another is we just came home from our trip and pulled into the driveway and there was only one bark, not two. We did get a new pup, but he's too young to know when to bark. I went to the pound and adopted a real sweetie. When you are ready, that's the place to go. Good luck!! And again so sorry for your loss.

I like the picture of him on the sofa chair....Looks like he is doing a fine job at making himself at home already.

Thats a cool way to get a dog man. Goodluck with the new companion my man!:D

Hey tool....read the thread a little better, Sorry to hear Project.

Hey dickhead. Don't jump to conclusions. I was reading the post and had to get up to go do something but I saw the picture and wanted to reply about the one of him on the couch.

Sorry Project about the missing dog....I feel like shit about posting what I said and not seeing the part about the dog being lost.

I had all good intentions in my reply and I'm sure you can see that. I'm afraid BDCooper coul;dn't and jumped on me for a single mistake.

Don't worry about it flex...I've posted without reading the whole thread before too.

I'm sure DB's just lookin' out for me.

He did make himself at home quickly when I let him in. He wasn't in the house but maybe 15 minutes before he was sprawling out on the couch.

I had to go on a business trip the day after he died...which was probably a good thing. Helped to take my mind off of things, really.

I got home last night, and as I was going through the house, I saw the remnants of one of his chew toys. He had this little stuffed dog that I named Matt....he'd pretty much ripped off the arms and legs, and the old joke seemed appropriate.

Anyway...my new job is going to require a fair amount of travel, so it could be a while before I get a new pup....we'll see.
