WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Army helicopter with 12 American troops on board crashed in the Philippines on Thursday and no survivors were found, the Pentagon said, as U.S. forces backed a thrust by the local military against Muslim rebels as part of Washington's global war on terrorism.
The Defense Department said no hostile fire was reported when the crash occurred and that the big, twin-rotor CH-47 chopper crashed into the sea in darkness while flying from Basilan to Mactan Air Base.
"A total of 12 U.S. military personnel -- crew members -- were on board," Navy Lt. Cmdr. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, told Reuters.
"No survivors have been found," he said. "There were no reports of hostile fire. The helicopter went down about 120 miles north-northwest of Zamboanga at 2:30 a.m. local time on Friday (1:30 p.m. EST Thursday), according to Davis. He said another CH-47 "Chinook" helicopter was flying with the chopper that crashed and remained in the area to conduct a search.
The incident occurred as a growing number of American forces were arriving in the Philippines to take part in training exercises in which Manila's military is conducting a stepped-up battle against Muslim rebels in the Asian nation.....

This is the 7-8th helicopter "crash" since the US intiated relitalitory strikes in Afghanastan for September 11th terrorist attacks.
Sound high? Yes. Most of the crashes have been blamed on mechinical error which would precipitate a massive investigation into the airworthiness of affected helicopters. Has an investigation into the causes of numerous helicopter crashes been intiated, which have claimed over 40-50 service personal lives? No.
The Department of Defense is coddeling US civilian moral by fabricating events preceeding the helicopter crashes. Ever since Viet Nam, the US civilian population has been weary about heading into armed conflict. This puts a real strain on purposed US military action via politicians. If u keep civilian moral high, support for the war is high, and u can "run the board". But if Americans start coming home in body bags, it looks like the Department of Defense is worried civilian moral will waver.
Anyone know the exact number of helicopters which have crashed during combat missions in Afghanastan??
