Something in the microwave making it spark and shit

Question:

If the microwave sparks on the inside cos there's metal in there, does it damage the actual microwave oven itself? How?

Also if you rig it so it stays open while it runs, how long would it take to cook you?

Mostly just interested in the first question, thanks

I don't think it hurts the microwave..... but creates an interesting fireworks show....

It HAS hurt my microwave, but I have a different one from the norm. There's a piece of plastic/cardboard (in mine, not sure all have this) on the side of the microwave inside. That plastic had a hole burned through it from being dirty and from putting dishes in there with metal lining on them. It was about 4inches square and was replaced easily with one screw.

thanks

While on way too many microdots once, I put a jiffypop in the wave and we all sat back and watched armegeddon.

Good times.

I have some plates that make the microwave spark. Wtf.. who makes plates that can't go in the microwave?! Tools.

oh yeah, residual from the sparking and shit will probably melt something inside the microwave, it wont actually hurt the nuking mechanism.

ummm, people in China who have'nt even discovered milk yet, let alone microwaves and their specifications.

There's clearly a breakdown in communication somewhere as both the plate and the microwave say "made in China".

I watched an episode of "Myth Busters" about this. They put a fork in a microwave, and turned it on. Sparks flew, but the microwave was fine afterwards, because they used the same microwave to test other urban legends about those ovens.

The microwave oven shit?
I didn't know that were possible. How can an oven shit? LOL

Damn best response ever.

THis is a very useful thread. I have always been afraid of damaging the microwave oven and now I don't ever have to worry about that again. :)

I put my dog in there once to dry her and the damn collar sparked. shit.

Pants on fire!

lol read my reply bros. Seriously. I damaged mine from doing that. Then again, like I said, it's a microwave/some other type of oven, so maybe it's different, but I doubt it.

You bare a striking resemblance to Archie. "Sugar, honey, honey, you are my candy girl and you got me wanting you."

There are some that do not care about it if you stick metal in them. They are very aloof. In fact, if your pissy about it, they might not even turn on. And surely wont heat up what you stick in there....

hmmmm... sounds like my ex...

Per Myth busters..

Doing this for a brief time won't hurt the microwave, but if you
let it go on long enough it can..

The metal can get very very hot and melt the plastic interior of the oven.

Also the metal does not absorb the radio waves put out from the the magnetron and actually reflects it, damaging the magnetron gun on the top of the oven.

Oh yeah that too. My magnetron went bad and had it replaced. Luckily it was still under warranty, it would have cost $250-$350 just for the magnetron, plus installation.

Don't mess with metal. Those Myth Busters only do a one-time test, like Y_Lifter said. It happens over time. I not longer cook metal. lol
