Someone explain this to me. Union job question.

How come companies that have a Union representing the employees can afford to pay their workers much more money and still stay in business? For instance, back in 1983, I had a part-time job with Roadway (trucking industry). I made over $13 an hour. Pretty good back then. Other trucking companies were paying anywhere from 5 to 6$ an hour.
So how could Roadway afford to pay their workers much more money and still stay in business?

My guess is that nearly all of these companies can afford to pay their workers more, but they don't because of greed. Some take a very large slice of that pie. Bastards.

It sure is depressing to know that $13/hour was good then, but $15/hour sucks ass now. Damn inflation!!!!!!!!
