Someone explain backs to me

Why is it bad to lift stuff with your back and put strain on it, wouldn't that just be working it? What is the difference between putting strain on your back and working it with deadlifts or other back exercises.
I'm not if this is the right place for this but oh well.

When you say lifting with your back do you mean bending at the waist as opposed to bending with the knees? IF so, there are many factors. usually when you bend from the waist the load is further from your body. This increases the force your low back has to create (force arm, resistance arm shit from physics) which is too much load for the muscles. Also tight hammys add into the equation as well. Also you are just a hell of a lot more stable bending from the knees...your quads and ass are the strongest muscles in the body

yeah thats what i mean, thanks. but what would happen if you just bent over a whole bunch (at the waist) without carrying anything, is this still making the back do more then it can (straining it) or would this help it.

heres something else im wondering, if you have a flat bench and you lay on your stomach on it, then you have a barbell touching the ground below the bench, which you raise so its almost touching the bottom of the bench, is this straining your back or making it stronger? and is there a name for this exercise?

thanks

the exercise you described would be great for increasing strength. The only thing is that most benches arent high enough off of the ground so you can't get full extension at the elbow...so it would be like only doing half reps

what if my back hurts for the rest of the day after i do it? is that ok and will it probably just go away once i get stronger?

if its a soreness type of hurt that is good. If its a sharp shooting, radiating pain that limits your daily activities then its not so good. Learn to judge how your body reponds to different exercises and regulate your workouts accordingly
