Sherman fireman charged

BY MARY JANE FARMER

HERALD DEMOCRAT

An arrest made in Denison Friday night has unsettled law enforcement and firefighters throughout Grayson County.

Mr XXXXXXXX, 39, was jailed on a charge of manufacture-delivery of a controlled substance over 400 grams.

Officials have confirmed Mr XXXXXXXXto be a 14-year employee and a lieutenant with the Sherman Fire Department, a reserve police officer with the Sherman Police Department, and an employee of SET Environmental (formerly Disposal Solutions) in Tom Bean.

Denison Police Sgt. Mike Eppler said officials from U.S. Customs and the Department of Homeland Security contacted them last week regarding a suspicious package that had entered the United States from Thailand through the U.S. Postal Service.

When the package arrived, officials opened it and found "a large amount of anabolic steroids," Eppler said. The Denison narcotics division obtained a warrant through a district court for the residence shown on the box's address label. After officials wrapped it back up, a postal worker delivered it to 1211 South Lillis in Denison, and then the narcotics officers went in with the warrant.

Inside the box sat a tall tin canister, similar to those that hold Christmas cookies, which held a plastic baggie of 17 ampoules with liquid steroid, 20 syringes, and seven other plastic baggies, each containing 1,000 steroid pills. At that time, officers placed Pickle under arrest. Arraignment followed and bail was set at $10,000, which Pickle posted and was released Saturday before dusk.

The large quantity of the controlled substance places in the category of a Group 3 offense, which is listed as a first-degree felony, punishable by a term of 10-99 years in prison and/or a fine not to exceed $100,000, according to the Texas Health and Safety Code, if he's found guilty.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse said anabolic steroids are used by some athletes to build muscle and boost athletic performance. Their use have increased in recent years, even among middle-school aged children, the Institute's information states.

Eppler said the actual street value of the seized contraband had not yet been determined.

Sherman Fire Capt. Doug Blackburn, appointed as spokesman early Monday for the fire department, said he could only confirm that Pickle was employed there. Later in the day, he said all future inquiries must go through City Attorney Charles Rowland. Phone calls to that office were unanswered Monday afternoon.

Pickle has been placed on administrative leave from the Sherman Fire Department, Blackburn reported.

Sherman Police Chief Larry Caylor said Mr XXXXXXXX has been relieved of any duties with the Sherman police department and said that he knew the investigation to be a multi-agency effort. Eppler said the task force was a cooperative effort between Denison police, the U.S. Customs and Homeland Security department.

Although Denison police will continue an investigation into the incident, officials did not say if that would include internal investigations.

Arrest and arraignment procedures are not an indication of guilt.

The second recent bust involves a 10,000 tab shipment from Canada, this is the first time I've personally read of a shipment from Canada getting caught by US customs

Man Arrested After He Receives Steroids in the Mail
Friday, April 25, 2003, 2:57:09 PM

(Iowa City-AP) -- An Iowa City man is facing drug charges after police say he received than ten-thousand anabolic steroid tablets in the mail.

Mr XXXXXXXX was arrested yesterday on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and failure to affix a drug tax stamp.

Police say the two packages that contained the tablets had a Canadian return address, which police believe was false.

Officer Chris Akers of the Johnson County Narcotics Task Force says the Bureau of Customs and Immigration discovered the drugs during routine X-rays in Chicago. ( as usual :-) )

Anyway guys stay safe and if you're going international keep the shipments SMALL !

That sucks.
The first guy got busted for 17 amps of gear and probably 1000 Dbols
The made a big deal of a personal supply of $300-400 worth of AS.

Steer clear of packs coming from thailand! just about every bust i read-someone has a large amount coming from thailand. That place has been flagged for quite some time now. Also, since the SARS epidemic-china apparently is not a good place to be ordering from right now...

I always wonder why cops don't ahve anything better to do than bust the local guy who likes gear.....fucking imbiciles:)

It said he had 7 baggies of a steroid pill with each baggie containing 1000 pills. 7000 D-bol is a bit more than personal use.

Good to see my fucking tax dollars doing something to make the streets a lot safer. Good job feds.

A good reminder of how dangerous this game is. This type of shit is becoming more and more common and will probly get worse before it gets better.
