1. If I want to make the PERFECT 12 ounce cup of chocolate milk, it requires that the mixture is 42% Hershey's Syrup. What I have right now is 8 ounces of a milk/syrup mixture that I know (and don't ask how) contains 30% syrup. What must the syrup concentration be in the remaining mixture that I must add in order to achieve perfection? I came up with 54%

2. Two cars are leaving Phil's house at precisely the 6:20 PM. The first car, driven by Phil is headed north. The second car, driven by Roman, is headed south. Phil, because he is not a good citizen, is going 20 MPH faster than Roman. If, at 7:50, they are exactly 168 miles apart, how fast is each going? Should Phil be arrested for speeding? This one I needed the formula to get the answer, I can get it but I dont know the formula

seriously, just pour the syrup down your throat and then chug the milk straight out of the gallon. Its better that way ;)

brb, ill see if I can figure it out

Question 1:

8/12 * 30% + 4/12 * x = 42% total

x = (12/4) * 42% - (12/4)*(8/12) * 30%

x = 126% - 60% = 66%

Now check our math:

8/12 * 30% + 4/12 * 66% = 42%

Question 2:

90 mins = 1.5 hours

P = phil's speed in MPH
R = Roman's speed in MPH

P * 1.5 hours + R * 1.5 hours = 168 (since they are moving in opposite directions, the speed*rate products must be added)

P = R + 20

thus substitution for P yields:

(R + 20) * 1.5 + R * 1.5 = 168

now solve for R:

3.0 * R + 30 = 168

3 * R = 138

R = 46

therefore:

P = R + 20 = 66

So yes, Phil should be arrested for speeding if the speed limit is 65 MPH or lower.

You are making me look bad ;)

It's the former engineer in me... I can't resist a word problem (or a Seduko puzzle, for that matter :P )

LOL, I kinda figured... I work with two engineers ;)

Here ya go Mr Plunkey. I have the answers but I will cross check it with you:

4. A manufacturer can sell a certain product for $80 per unit. Total cost consists of a fixed overhead of $4500 plus production costs of $50 per unit.

(a) How many units must the manufacturer sell to break even?

(b) What is the manufacturer’s profit or loss if 200 units are sold?

The answer to (a) = 150

150 x 30 (profit per unit) = 4500 (fixed production cost)

(b) = 1500

30 x 200 = 6000 - 4500 = 1500

Question 4:

Part A)

We know that the break-even point is when total cost equals total revenue. Hence:

80*x = 4500 + 50*x

now solve for x:

30*x = 4500

x = 150 units necessary for break-even

Part B)

Profit at 200 units sold:

Profit = 200*80 - 4500 - 200*50

Profit = 16,000 - 4,500 - 10,000

Profit = 1,500

They were for entertainment purposes..........I said I had the answers already. It is a stupid class I need for my degree, which is a waste but sounds nice.
