As first I was just thinking she's some old broad from the south and let a couple of ngr bombs slip out and it was no real big deal. I basically think every cold ass honky from down there either talks or talked that way. Then I read the court docs. This family and company has some issues and they need to be taxed hard.

Myself and Paula Deen have the same home town. If one drives through West Savannah and then looked at places like Tybee, Wilmington Island, Isle of Hope, or pretty much anything on highway 80 east heading toward the beach, it doesn't even look like the same town. After reading the forums on hometown news, Perspective on her pretty much falls along class lines....

I don't know man, what's in those docs goes way beyond class. Class (I think) you can make jokes about because people can always work harder, get smarter, and be better for those around you. What her brother did and what she and her company turned a blind eye to is inexcusable. From what I can tell from these docs, they treated every employee that wasn't a white male like absolute shit, and every black employee like they were less than human. If that guy tried that shit in Philly he'd have his whiskey bottle shoved up his ass and be beaten half to death. To Utah's credit (where the black folks are the Jazz), they'd just be ignored, shunned, and put out of business immediately.
 
I'm somewhat apprehensive to talk about this because I was the one who told people in another thread that I didn't think the country had progressed the way others are constantly talking about. I really need to read the complaint, because what you said jnevin, is indicative of what people who identified themselves as lower class were saying. This is on the Savannah news websites like "the coastal source" and wsav. But much of that talk was speculation based on experiences, not actual situations of discrimination. So I will read the complaint when I get home

I made a few posts on the link that talks about her sons defending her. I pretty much said "typical". One day I wanna buy a house on "The Landings" on skidaway island. Its hard to believe a private gated community right on the beach exists in a town that is so poor. So its easy for people to have such dissonant views in a place like that.

First off I don't care, blacks run around calling each other Nigger all the time. How about this, blacks stop using the term if it's so offensive. Believe it or not the only black guy I have ever seen who hates blacks saying Nigger is Flavor Flav????? Really????

Second off we are supposed to have freedom of speech so she should be able say what ever. I can tell you up in Beaufort just North of Savannah there use to be a street preacher who stood on a corner yelling at people that they were godless, drunkin, fornicators. Do I need some guy on a street corner yelling that I'm going Hell for my ways??? No I don't but he has right to do that no matter kind of an idiot he looks like. His favorite word was fornicator so I'm figuring he was probably gay...LOL.

Third I have met some of Paula's family and using the n' word is low on the scale of what's wrong with them.

I agree that she seems like a fake, racist, and general piece of shit. But what about all the rappers selling millions of records, calling whites crackers and degrading women in every other song? Should wal-mart and target pull their albums off the shelves? Should mtv not show their videos?

kanye west's "black skinhead" comes to mind. I doubt a white person could title a song "skinhead" and have it go over too well.
 
Walmart and target do not sell anything with that kind of content already as is their right. Kanye West is hammered regularly in the press. He gets the same treatment as Dean does, just from the other side of the media.
Deans biggest problem from my perspective was her comment when asked if she called the black men in tuxedo's niggers. Her response was something along the lines of 'No, that's not what these men were'.

If the term cracker is truly offensive why haven't white people gotten the Cracker Barrel Restaurant chain shut down? I do agree with you but its the way it is said that would be offensive, if another race said oh he's my cracker I wouldn't care but if he said fuck that cracker and all his honkey friends then yes it's offensive. Do you really think the names of those places/ things are being used in the same context as the way black people use it when referring to whites? I hope not. And how can you tell me what's offensive to me?

For the term "Cracker", you're arguing common use (which is an interesting position) and then making a subjective judgement that "cracker" isn't offensive but is instead comically stupid.

The only time in my 48 years I've heard the term coon was when a white co-worker from Louisiana was saying he didn't mind being referred to as a coon ass. I've always assumed it meant redneck. I also think it's stupid.

Here's the difference... If it was just some person ngring it up and being ignorant, it's fine. They look as stupid as every rapper that says cracker, honky, whatever. Most of those guys make their money, spend it, and fade away anyway. She created and fueled an environment that encouraged treating people like less than dogs. They treated everyone like shit. They treated women like less than shit. They treated their black employees the same as I would have imagined they were back in the 50's.

They ruined lives because they could. Fuck them.

Intent is everything, so don't play that card. Reality is, when someone says "cracka", they say it hatefully. My favorite part about that is, "cracka" might as well mean "massa", since it was the title given to the people cracking the whip.

Growing up in Philly, I had a few ass beatings that ended up with me being stomped on being called cracker. I took every opportunity to point out the fact that they were calling me boss.

So the sponsors who keep her will be boycott eventually.... They are gone. This is a good thing. She should be penalized if the discrimination and harsh work environment allegations are true.

As far as your stereotypes about blacks frequently using the N word I can say I don't regularly use that word nor do I regularly use of on the forums. So I disagree with you assertion that all blacks commonly use the word. Some use this work like says brothers or man. I'm not one such person

You need to pay attention. The publisher cancelled that book this week. Her supporters will just just have to drop that $20 in the tin can outside her restaurant, which is actually quite good. I ate there a few months ago.

She may be white but as a staff manager their blatant racism did cause her distress because she had to find a way to comfort her employees after each incident, convince them of staying, etc.

That's a very dangerous argument that opens the door to someone claiming indirect distress or damages.

Protecting the concept of standing is a pretty big deal.

Racism creates a hostile work enviroment for everyone really, specially since she was in a management position and had to do damage control over and over again, as a white person how could she convey to her black employees that she understood their situation?

That's a good question, but it raises the question as to what measures she took to end the situation. For example, if she had protested and then faced retaliatory action or subsequently experienced a hostile working environment herself, then she'd have her own cause of action.

Simply saying she empathized with another person's plight wouldn't give her standing. I guess she could claim emotional distress, but it would be her burden to show that those specific actions caused the distress and then to prove damages arising from the distress. That's a pretty tough putt and would open up the plaintiff's life for public view.

Dean and her brother were definitely scumbags here. And what the plaintiff is trying to do is clever. Since you can sue a ham sandwich, one bold lawsuit strategy is to make outrageous claims only to clear the way for embarrassing depositions. 'Tis the American Way!

They also seem to have made sure to make her unemployable in the area which forced her to move, that is also something she can seek compensation for.

I have said all along, context matters, as it does with us calling each other nigga (which I still don't do). I don't see me getting bent over the two above. Coon wouldn't even strike me as something intended to be offensive because I've never heard it used that way.

When my wife was in the hospital to deliver she was telling a story about how we had caught raccoons the night before but phrased it differently; we had a black nurse in the room. Wife: "We caught two more coons last night!" Me: "OMG, RAccoons dear, you mean raccoons." The nurse started laughing hysterically so I think we have the green light to use it.

Coon Ass is a term used in Southern Louisiana quote a bit
But atleast in these instances , there is a lineage of French and Indian (Cherokee or Choctaw Nation) decent that goes along with a homegrown culture in those parts. But even with the self proclaimed "coon-asses" that a personally know , I would never call them that even if they liked it. It's better served that people in the culture use the term how they know and use the term.

But Clearly Zimmerman was not using the term coon-ass (A self described French Indian ethnic / Heritage mixed person )to describe Trayvon.... Zimmerman's is use of the word coon is 100% derogatory
 
the word "coon" is used pretty frequently around here, 99% of the time meaning raccoon. maybe zimmerman couldn't see what he was chasing and thought it was a raccoon

So I read through this mess. A couple of observations:

1) this is just the accusers story and I am sure embellished by her lawyer
2) this is a sexual harassment/ discrimination lawsuit - which she will win
3) There is no racial issues here between the plaintiff and defendant - that is all thrown in there by the lawyers to grandstand, hit the media and force a better settlement
4) I have no doubt the comments in here by Bubba are true. I deal with people like this on a daily basis. Not a day goes by where I don't hear the N word in this town and usually when they are talking about the current President.
