Got all the equipment, just gotta set it up. This is gonna be awesome, no wires no cables. Surf the internet on my laptop while droppin' a deuce in the bathroom, how lovely.

:)

Yeah, I have one, and it works great. There are all kinds of ways to "extend" it also, up to a mile or so,,...

Good Luck

Surfing the internet while growing a tail in the office.

Fun, fun, fun until daddy takes the t-bird away.

One of the best ways to extend the range is a colinear antenna.

You can buy them for around $100, or build your own. This site has instructions.

GSXR, if you don't put some kind of security on your wireless system, shit like this will happen. Somebody will come around with a directional antenna (a wired Pringles can) and tap into your network, without you knowing about it and:

a) hack into your computer
b) use your ISP connection

which will:
c) cost you money

Do NOT activate the WEP security, because that can be hacked easily too.

The best thing is to get a VPN service installed on your laptop.

128 bit encryption should do the job.

Yes, I know, I work in the security industry, so I have a couple "gadgets" to use. Also my entire street is pretty much comprised of geriatric patients for the most part. The closest hacker (my best guess anyway from the looks of the neighborhood) would probably be beyond the signal range.

Cool, as long as you have it covered.

I was at a security seminar a couple of weeks ago, and one of the presenters put up a screen shot of all the open wireless networks here in DC.

Very scary to think that some government agency or a non-profit would be unaware that their wireless network is wide open for all to see and use.

Yeah, I was at the InfoSecurity show here in NY recently, and alot of people were inquiring about WiFi protection.

Well right now, only one of my machines is going to use the wireless, my other 3 with be hard wired to the hub. I'm not worried about intrusion into one of my machines, I have firewall software running on them and they're behind a NAT, the only concern for me (which isn't much of a concern considering the neighborhood I live in) is outside people trying to gain network access to surf the net. But like I said, since only one machine (behind my NAT) is using wireless, I'll just configure the router to allow that one IP through.

;)
