but I have a problem. I am not very good with computers. never been into the technical stuff so here's a question.

I have a dell from '02. have windows xp. great. I lost the system disk and everything so I have none of the CD's it came with.

I havent used my computer (on someone else's right now) in a year since I didnt have internet access.

Hooked it up today, and the damn thing must have a virus.

everytime I click on the internet explorer it just keeps going to some weird address and then the website doesnt even pop up. it just "flickers" (for lack of a better term)

So can I go to to the computer store and get some sort of anti virus disc to fix it? or can I somehow manually reset all my setting and set it back to as if the only programs on it are the original windows XP ones. (i.e. get rid of every program I ever installed)

lol...
ok, you have a few choices.
you could risk spending money on an antivirus and seeing if it will remove it- i recommend norton disk doctor.
even if it doesn't fix it and you have to reload everything, you'll still want it anyway.

if that doesn't work, (and knowing that its too difficult for you to delete it all manually), I'd borrow someone elses operating system disk and try installing that. You'll lose what you have, but who cares at this point.
if that doesn't work, bring it to a computer center and they'll take care of it for you.

DO THIS SECOND:
Run this, it's free and safe:System Mechanic

Sounds like a registry issue.

Once oyu download the program go to "maintain" then choose "pc maintinance wizard" and let that run.

DO THIS FIRST:
Open explorer go to tools, select internet options then look in the general tab and post what it says.

Next while still in the general tab section hit delete for browsing, cookies and such, close then re-open explorer.

you may have missed the part where he said he can't open a web browser...

do a system restore.

your computer should have one set automatically from a while back

hopefully before you got the virus

At this point I think your best choice is to ask a friend who knows about this thing to reinstall XP from another copy. You can then go to Dells website and download the drivers you need

If the computer is really fucked up, it's much faster to start from scratch, scrap all the pre-installed SW and simly use the HW.

I agree... system restore will work for hardware, but if he's infected, it won't do anything. plus, he's already stated being computer illiterate.

alright so im going to go out and do something about this. using this guy's computer is a super drag. any last pieces of advice?

Try re-setting your home page to something like Google. Right click on the Explorer icon on your desktop and select "Properties" and go to the "General" page. At the top there should be a place where you can enter your home page of choice.

already did that part. tried setting to home page msn.com and apply, done etc.

shut down, restarted computer, double clicked explorer, same thing.

i am going to buy the mcafee virus thing. i read the box, claims to eliminate viruses (which at this point I KNOW is the problem)

norton or mcafee. which one?

Dude. And you call yourself Asian?

Next think you know, you're going to be telling us the wonders of formerly freaking gaijin girls...

so after buying the McAfee Virus sofware, then buying the wireless adaptor it wouldnt work. so i thought, wait, i have a cable line in my room, why not buy a cable modem? alright.

bought the cable modem. didnt work. called tech support for the ISP AND the Modem company (i swear to god I feel you guys when you bitch about tech support being outsourced to india--i couldnt understand shit), the woman/man (shemale??) named Leslie said that it was because i had a computer that was ethernet so I had to buy an ethernet adapter. she claimed that no house was allowed two cable modems in the same house.

so i went to buy an ethernet adapter. bought it. yay. hooked it up.

um, no ethernet connetion in the back of my computer.

so i called the tech support for the wireless adaptor manufacturer. omg. it was an american! what do you know. he then talked me through the steps thoroughly and configured the wireless adapter to the router. we found the link and it was up.

um no internet.

wtf? oh, mcafee didnt fix the hardware. i still had 12 files infected that I couldnt delete or "quarantine" or clean.

so i ended up spending the entire day returning all my items bought, and took my shit to Geek Squad.

worst day ever for an asian and computer.

i am totally a disgrace to my race.

kinda like Wayne Brady is to his
