So how did they manage without Air Conditioning

Porches, Windows that opened, Creeks that were swimable,
not as many Fatties, Not as many extreme elderly alive..

Down in the south the heat was dealt with by a couple ways. The houses always had trees around them to offer shade from the sun. Even on farms, where most of the land was cleared, there was a group of large trees right around the house. The houses were designed with high ceilings to allow the heat to rise away from the living area. There was also the porches. Down South people used porches as much as they used any room inside the house. Also, the people were more use to the weather so only the most extreme heat would cause problems.

Tom Brokaw wasn't around to tell them they should die from global warming, so they toughed it out instead of croaking!

Dude is clearly from the south, props.

back in the day?? I'm seeing on the news people dying left and right cause of the heat.

well, dullboy says that the average life span 150 years ago was like 40. today it's 80. so they obviously didn't manage all that well without a/c or antibiotics, the 2 greatest inventions in the history of the world.

Economic/population growth in the South is a direct result of A/C! The truth is people did very little in extreme heat. Plus they had slaves......after the end of slavery and until A/C the deep south was a wasteland!

Are you reading a different thread? The question was about air conditioning.

Great points about the archetecture. I think this last part though is a little misleading though. I think peeps used to be more savvy about hot weather and know how to take appropriate precautions, rather than just being used to it.

dullboy mentioned a/c in his post as being one of two of the greatest inventions of modern man. the steam engine being the third.

the post to which you're referring was very clear and concise, and, as usual, dullboy made a good point. perhaps you should go back and re-read dullboys brilliant observation.

are you always so quick to criticize? do you have an overbearing mother or a boss who rides you a lot? dullboys bets that you do...

it would be great if dullboy never posted again especially on my threads

dullboy implored you to re-examine your sexuality. have you done so yet? dullboy doesn't see patients anymore, but he would make an exception for you since you seem like such a nice well adjusted guy.

dullboy says brilliant observation. you mean likes hats and stuff?

they were used to it. were just spoiled

we're not spoiled, we're evolved and were smart enough to have invented a/c. They were too busy back then inventing cars and planes ;-)
Antibiotics were not one of the best inventions. Antibioics though they help, have caused more super bacteria then ever b4 and have actually caused more illness than prevented it.
The best invention ever......the internet. The best way to share info to the masses. Education is power..that's assuming ppl use the net to educate themselves.

as dullboy brilliantly pointed out in his earlier post in this thread, they didn't get that used to it. the average person died at a much younger age in the past. the average life expectancy of a roman citizen was 22. a mid 19th century north american settler died at 40. today, the average person lives past 80, and one of the contributing factors to prolonged life expectancy is climate control.

did you know that today in central africa the average life expectancy is 37?

so you don't consider doubling life expectancy (by over 40 years) since the introduction of antibiotics and air conditioning to not be more significant than the internet?

dullboy says that you can't post on EF when you're dead. aren't you 40? 100 years ago you would more likely than not be dead already. lol

nah - more garden variety stuff like chlorea and stuff that antibiotics cure.

dullboy says most people who die young in africa shit themselves to death. (dehydration)

hahah..yes I am 40 and with this heat I feel dead!

It's not antibiotics that have doubled life expetancy, it's better awarness of health and living conditions. I am not saying antibiotics don't help, but they certainly are not the cause of humans living longer.

yes but if these ppl had cleaner water and better living conditons they would not be "shitting themselves to death"!
Antibiotics is not the cure, the cure is to prevent!

dullboy says that the fact that you purposely refuse to recognize beautiful women demonstrates some sort of reaction formation. it's a suprisingly common defense mechanism.

I disagree. The motocycle blows away the stupid internet. If I didn't have the internet, I would be alot wealthier.
