Snowboarders!! Help needed!

I am not sure how many boarders we have on here, maybe Kronk can help out.

I am 6'2".. wear a size 12 boot.. weigh 200+.. under 210 right now...

I am just about to buy a new board for this year and I was looking at a 160cm board... my previous board was 167cm and WIDE.. I am not so concerned about the length, but do any of you wear a size 12+ and ride a regular width board?

What is the rule of thumb regard the wide boards?

Brian

Well dude i am a skiier but will try to help you with what i know. The lenght does not really matter that much as much as the stiffness of the board. I know that boards much like skis are more forgiving when they flex more, so if you are moving up in skill you will be better with a more stiff board of the same lenght.

I am not sure on the width part, but i would assume that with bigger feet you want a wider board, right? Just ask the shops resident boarding expert, i am sure they will help you. If you are buying on line call a shop like a prospective customer and ask away.

Better yet, rent a few boards from a ski shop and buy the type that suits you.

I am almost perfectly perpendicular to my board, front slightly angled forward, I noticed when I was ridding a narrow board that my toes would drag a little but never caused me any problems. My feet are not that big that they would catch and cause me to take a spill. I ride a fairly narrow board 160CM and I am 6'1" 195 pounds. I like the 160 because they are more easy to manover and I can do better tricks when jumping and shit. I would ask the guy at the shop that you are buying your board from what they think. They can tell you more, 167cm seems a little long, but I am not sure what type of riding you are doing I do a combination of trail riding and freestyle. I like a more narrow board, just my opinion. Again, I would suggest asking an expert about it. Maybe ask on this message board here: http://www.snowboardermag.com.

you should not have a problem finding a good wide board. I have size 9.5 boots, and my boots hang over a bit. You would catch too much toe if you went with a regular board.

160 would be about right. depends on your level. shorter boards are more for freestyle, park or pipe, and low to mid level. a little bit longer and you get more speed, but loose a little frestyle, but not that much to make a noticable difference.

I always grab a board and if its halfway between a couple inches below my chin and my close to my nose its fine. Go to a board shop, tell them whats up, they should know their stuff. even if you dont buy it from them, you can get the idea of what to look for.

you gotta go wide lestat...there isnt a boarder i know with feet over 11's that dont go wide...if you dont you will break your toes or feet...kronk did a long while back..

i will have him look up some boards and get back to you if you want....hell i might just do it..ive been boarding longer than him anyway...lol

I'm not worried about the length... the 160cm I think I am cool with, even at my height.. but I'd like to get a non-wide board if possible.

Bro, i have been riding since 1988, i only lived a half hour from Vail so i got to ride all the time! I love snowboarding and have had all sorts of different boards over the years. Depending on your skill level you can ride a shorter board and still go big. I have dropped cliffs on a 154 and i am 6'. I currently am riding a 157, but i will probably get a new board this season. Fuck getting a long board, they are only good if you can go big and ride powder a lot. I fucking hate toe-drag so i would get the wide board. They still have the deep sidecut so it wont matter. If your toes hang off too far you cannot lay it down while carving without catching. I had a narrow board one year and fucking hated it. I kept it a month and sold it.

I hear you brother, 160 should be kicking, but as far as going fat or not, I like the fat board (wide) much better. I get a smooth ride, bigger AIR, nicer carving, its all around a much better deal. I wear size 11 and I cant stang toe drag. If you can deal with the drag, fuck it, get what you need. For me, WIDER IS BETTER.

Peace

thanks for the info, I will check that link out now...

thisis something that scares me :

Wide boards are not usually the answer! "You have size 11 feet so you need a wide board." True, if you want to ride the slowest, least maneuverable board you could buy. Remember, wide rides can fix your "toe drag" problem in an instance. But, you will end up with three worse problems to take it's place. Namely, Lack of speed, sluggish heel/toe response, and more "lateral flex" (the tendency that all boards have to twist off of an edge). Toe drag is only one problem, and it is livable, with many good workarounds such as: appropriate forward binding angles, well designed boots and bindings, and good binding adjustment. It is important to note that your toes and heels (with boots on) must hang over the edge of your board at least one half inch. This is necessary for leverage over the edge, to make the board carve correctly. Many believe that the only benefit to wide boards, is for pure park and freestyle riding, at close to zero degree stance angles, with huge feet. One final note: there is a very good reason why wide board sales are in decline, and used wide boards are the most common trade ins on the market today.

So I checked out that link.. the wide boards have a waist width of 265cm or so... the board I am looking at has a waiste width of 251.. so about 1.5 cm differece....

I REALLY want this board.. its the forum Destroyer.. 160cm.. they make a "Raider" that is basically the same board... but wider.. but I didn't want to go wide if I didn't have to.

what is worse, a big dopey sized 12 foot catching on the snow, or a wider board? You want less manueverable, get a long board. Long boards are for people that cannot do any sick tricks.

Go with the narrow board..

for size 11's...get a toe ramp or gas pedal, many bindings come with them now anyway..size 11 is borderline wide board, I ride a Ride Timeless 161 out west and a Burton Balance 160 on east coast hard pack I'm 5'9" 208 right now....the narrow board will be much more responsive, and you won't get toe drag with a ramp unless you're carving some sick turns.....

I tried the Yukon (wide timeless), definitely dampened the ride.

Well fuck....

Its either gonna be the Forum Destroyer 160cm with a 251mm waist..
OR
Forum Raider 160cm with a 265mm waist..

I'm borderline on the Destroyer.. it is the one I really want. I binding I am getting are RIDE TEAM binding... kick ass and they have risers built in the bring your toe up a little bit... the guys at the shop think I could probably make it work.. it could go either way though...

this is not my main concern, but the fucking Destroyer 160 looks so much more bad ass then the Raider 160..
