Smelling salts

What exactly do they do and why do I see bodybuilders using them just before a heavy set? Is it unhealthy? thanks.

I think its just suppose to like "wake you up" or something. Maybe stimulates adrenaline or something, im not sure.

But I do know, I have never seen a "bodybuilder" use them. That is more for powerlifters, maybe strongman type training.

I dont think smelling salts have any room in a purely bodybuilding routine. Or even training for that matter. I would assume they would be best used for max effort lifts or MEETS...strictly.

but who knows. Im a bodybuilder. Maybe a powerlifter or someome else will chime in on these who has first hand knowledge.

Had a boxing coach who used em on you if you got stunned in sparring. It's a respiratory stimulant so I'd imagine it'd help with max lifts.

The give you an awesome head rush before a big lift. Like a quick adrenaline boost. I have never seen a bodybuilder use them. Only my fellow strength athletes. Like I said I only use them for big max lifts and meets. Its not something you would do before a set of curls. As far as health is concerned the only thing It does to me is mess with my nose a little but Thats it. I have heard that they can lead to Alzheimer's from long term use, but I have never seen conclusive evidence of it.
