Smart Computer Folk?

I only updated to Windows XP today and got a fast connection.

Every time I try to play an audio or video file I get a notice that the RPC server is not working and there is insufficient memory. I dont even know what an RPC server is and I have plenty of memory.

I had a fairly well-known virus earlier today that uses a weakness in windows to force the system to reboot all the time.

it goes under the names

W32.Blaster.worm
W32/lovsan.worm
win32.poza
WORM.MSBLAST.A
Win32.poza

I looked up online what to do about it, but i did not completely understand the instructions and did them about half. Now the virus doesn`t seem to be there anymore but I cant play any media files.

Also, this was so already before I had this virus, I can`t copy/paste things.

any tips?

Do a repair install of Windows. Boot from the XP CD, and the repair console will be one of the options.

Then after that's done, go to Windows Update and do ALL the avilable updates.

Good advice and then set XP to do updates automatically and you are set. And stay off shady websites.

and if that dont werk, go into the BIOS setup and find the "Boot sequence" parameter. make sure that the CD rom boots before the Hard drive, or else, your sticking the CD in, wont do shit, if you want to boot from it.

if you dunno how to get into the BIOS, ima try an explain a bit.
I'm slightly drunk, so excuse me, if it's rather unclear:

anyway, to get into the BIOS, you need to hit the DEL key on the ... err... post screen, I think it's called. in the very beginning, when the computer starts, there's this Star logo or some shit. there's a memory test and such. and it should say "press DEL key gently to slide into the BIOS setup area."

by the way, how in the fuck did you manage to get a new OS, and infect yourself with a virus in one day

is that the KaZZZa virus?
if it is, I think there's a simple way to clean it up. should be posted somewhere on the net.

if you're a reinstalling the whole thing,
and since you just got your dose of the win dose, may I suggest that you do a clean install into some different folder altogether. then just delete you old win folder, and some boot.ini cleanup and some shit.

there's nothing to lose, and you'll get a fresh start.

if you go to the microsoft website and search around, there is a program you can downlaod that will scan and delete the virus from your computer, it was when the worm virus was going around.
