small wrists hurting your training?

New member
i think its fucking mine up,,i have really thin wrists,,and i know i can push more reps out but these measly little pricks dont wanna play along, wish i had thick bad ass mo fo wrists:fro:

I too have really small wrists to go along with the rest of my small frame, they used to hurt pretty bad but thoroughly stretching and warming them up prior to training has really helped.

While I do not have small wrists, I can attest to pain. Last winter I shattered the outside two metacarpals in my right hand and dislocated a few bones in my wrist. It was all pinned back together for six weeks and is "somewhat" as good as new. I have found that stretching and warming up has helped the most in subverting the pain. I am going for a full range of motion again and also to rebuild the strength that I lost in my grip.

To do so I stretch by doing push-ups, and warm up by taking a 10 lb. plate and flexing through the range of motion for a couple of 30 sec. sets. By the time I do this, my wrist is warmed up and ready to deal with what I am about to put it through.

To strengthen my grip I incorporate heavy holds into deads, shrugs, and or just hang after pull-ups. I have not found a need for wraps or tape, but that strategy has helped in the past, and may work for you if you are damaging your wrists with the weight you are using.

hope this helps,
MJ

get some of that cream stuff that you can put on your wrists for sore/strained wrists... it really helps
dont keep going if they start getting 2 sore becos i did it and really fucked em up and couldnt lift for like 3 to 4 weeks

Small wrists do have some benefits. They make the forearms look bigger. They'll grow and strengthen up as you train. Also, don't wear gloves or wrist straps.

I agree with not wearing gloves and straps; however, lately I have indulged in using wrist straps and they seem to help re-enforce the integrity of my wrists. Probably all in my head though.:D

Deviance,
There are differing opinions on using support equipment just as there are on any topic. The rational of not using straps or gloves or belts for that matter goes something like this. If you use a piece of equipment to support part of your body, you will be come dependent upon it. I have even seen studies that indicate a weakening of the area(s) supported by these devices because of their use. I personally believe this is true, and further that you should not use any support devices unless there is impending damage due to the exercise/actions being performed.

Like I said earlier, I do not find a need for the use of gloves or straps, but that is because I am stretching, warming up and maintaining proper form throughout the exercise(s). If you do things in the proper order, with proper form you should have no troubles. Personally, it is not worth the dependence upon a device to forgo strengthening part of my body.

Hope this helps,
MJ

Agreed! :)

I used to have relatively skinny wrists and a weak grip. Then I started doing heavy dumbell shrugs without straps. I've slowly worked up to using the heaviest dumbells in the gym (140). Now I can hold those bastards forever.

i was just at wal-mart, and in they sporting goods section by the weights they had a forearm exerciser for $10. after taking it out of the box and trying it, i must say it works pretty damn good. i think one of these would definately help you guys out

Since I started using wrist wraps(not straps)my poundages on certain exercises have gone up. For instance, on close grip bench press I used to have to quit before failure because my wrists felt like they were going to snap. My muscles could handle the weight, but at that position my wrists were at a severe disadvantage. Same thing with weighted dips...
