I have done it with 28-29g 1/2" pins with a few types of gear to go IM. A small plunger/syringe concentrates more force than the larger ones, so it isn't hard to get it to pass through the needle. The only problems I have found are 1)you can't fit a high volume in the small syringes and 2) it is hard to plunge oil steadily. It's like you start to press and it as soon as the resistance threshold is met, the gear shoots right out. It's not too hard to get used to. I have had much harder times getting oil through a 23g in a 3mL syringe than through slin pins.
