I typically do these on both back and shoulder days....DB and BB (reverse on smithy)...

I saw a fairly large pumper do these heavy with BB in front with wrist straps...however he was rolling his shoulders....

I used to roll, but read so much negative stuff about it...now I just lift straight to ears and hold for about 2 secs.....seems to be working good for me...anyone else wish to comment? Ever used a trap bar?

Do not roll your shoulders. Just because someone is big doesn't mean they are using good form. I see guys rolling their shoulders all the time, and I cringe everytime I see it. :(

I agree. It also feels less effective when rolling the shoulders.

I second this, DON'T ROLL THE SHOULDERS ON SHRUGS. Roll them long enough and you'll begin to hear popping and grinding noises from the delts...
