should the world build an elevator to outerspace?

Read an article about it once, said they have some sort of material now that could actually stand the forces/weight to support that long of an elevator. Just not much of it and it would cost $$$$ to do it.

i wonder how wide it would have to be. in order to remain stable, know what i mean? you couldn't have an 8ft. wide 60 mile high structure. a pelican could knock it over.

elevator of Bable? Bobble? Babel? Curling's going to give you the Jebus smackdown after he's done with the sex show for his kids.

One of the biggies in material science right now is carbon nanotubes. They are strong, light, and can be produced at a rate now that is almost astonishing. Give it another 5 - 10 years, and they will be reinforcing almost all new, large scale construction.

So you're saying there's a chance...

Well, if you built it at that rate initially, you'd escape Earth's gravity and be in space. The farther away from the center of the earth's gravity the slower escape velocity has to be. That's why the idea of an orbiting Spacedock would be preferential for space travel, as craft leaving the station would require less energy to escape gravity.

Building a tower to space would be near impossible. Upper level winds would provide too much shear forces for the structure to be stable without a base wider than it is tall.

I can buy that.

"oh shit! the gulf stream shifted and hit our elevator...fuck!!!"

I think they need to try to build that cross continental underwater subway system. that would be friggin awesome. You could get from london to new york in like 45 mins I think.

that and what they designed would cost 3x10^18 $$$

First, they'd have to schmooze the dean and the alumni association to fund a feasibility study and add a new wing to the Sciences building.

Everyone else already took the funny one-liners, so I really don't have anything to contribute to this thread.

And to everyone dissing the physicists, you just be thankful that nathan isn't here. That's right. Pants.

is/was nathan a physicist?

How can none of you know who nathan is? Damn, I feel old or something. He was possibly one of the wittiest posters ever to grace EF. He was an astrophysics major in Canada... started grad school and kinda dissappeared.

You plat guys should do a member search for him. Great material.

Will do. I have to figure out what makes you guys tick, besides grants and the cyclonic action coin donation thingy at the mall.

I could never do that many drugs and still graduate with honors.

And he was far, far funnier than I. Probably from the drugs, but hey.
