Should I download this?

gonelifting

Elite Mentur
EF VIP
Spybot Search and destroy and maybe something else to protect my PC from shit. Anything else I need? Should I just pay up and go with a yearly contract with Macafee or something?

I just bought a new Dell desktop and I think it comes with some things for 3 months, but I won't use them if I don't have to.

I'm a big fan of the online scanners, since they're free, updated constantly, and don't take up hard-drive space.

for spyware:

http://www.trendmicro.com/spyware-scan/
http://www.spywareguide.com/txt_onlinescan.html?

for viruses (virii?):

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

...that being said, I do use LavaSoft's AdAware also. ...and make sure you're running a good firewall like ZoneAlarm, as well as a decent pop-up stopper.

I don't mean to be ungrateful. I thank you for the advice, but you listed 5 things there. Should I get them all?

I was told to get 3 security features.

1 Firewall
2 Virus something...
3 and..... I forget the third. damnit!

I've used Spybot before and it was'nt too difficult to use. If that would work, I'd use it again.

and Thanks smurf.

The only thing I run on a constant basis is my firewall (ZoneAlarm... free, and pretty much the best), and a pop-up stopper.

I'll do a spyware scan using the downloaded AdAware every couple of days. The links I provided all run from the web via Active-X or applets, so there's no need to download any of them; just bookmark the sites. I'd recommend using them all like once a week (doesn't take that long to scan your drives).

Some redundancy is good, since no program will catch every last security threat. (ex: the TrendMicro spyware scanner has found stuff that AdAware didn't.)

...you may need to scan more often if you have 'high-risk' browsing behavior, ie- surfing porn-sites and opening strange attachments in your e-mail.

Microsoft has a great one you can use and I believe it is free as long as you have a legit copy of windows.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - updates automatically, for free year round and works.
Spybot
Ad-aware
Zone Alarm Free

those 4 things and you are golden. Yes you need all 4. I would use mozilla firefox too, instead of internet explorer.

Microsoft's adware tool misses a LOT of bad cookies. If I run Ad-Aware right after the MS tool, it may catch 6-12 hits that the MS one missed.

you can preety much download anything you want for free. I use NOD for a antivirus and works great.

As for a firewall theres really no need unless you are afraid of being hacked into which i doubt rarely happens. These are pretty much more hassle than anything else. They waste your comps RAM and are not friendly with some app's.

Your other onei s anti-spyware.. i use the microsoft and ad-aware.

Another good thing for you to do as well as everyone else is dl a copy of Norton Ghost (hacked of course) and make a backup of your system once you get all your essential files installed so if anything does happen or you want to format for some reason then its a walk in the park and will take 1/4 of the usual time.

OK I got all 4 of those and another from the list that fogg88 gave.

Two questions. Should i lower the settings for the firewall? It pops up so often telling me my pants are unzipped wtf?

And more importantly... ADAWARE is freaking confusing. It gives a list of 50 items and it says "Be carefull asshole, don't remove all of them" wtf? how should i know which to remove and which to keep? Is there a rule of thumb? I know that's a loaded question, but I figured i'd throw it out there.

I would recommend clearing your cookies and temp internet files before you run your adware that way you will see less detections to delete.
For other programs or files that it warns for just read the description or search google and it will tell if a application you use depends on it or if its harmful etc.

As for the firewall... get used to it and its a pain i don't use :P

Thanks man. Lots of good help today. Frankly, I'm surprised I got it all. I'm gonna donate some k, I'm feeling so good about it.

For zonealarm, any program that uses the internet, it will ask you at first. Obviously you will recognize whatever you are trying to do at the moment...and click yes, don't ask me again.....when it pops up randomly and you don't recognize the program you will click no...that will rarely happen.

W/ adaware I uusally remove everything. But to be honet since I started using firefox I've had ZERO spy programs, ads...etc...

ive had one virus and my avg program caught it

it was my opinion

I saw this thing on that nerd computer tv station last week.

they had a computer infected with spyware and ran the top 10 most popular spyware removal programs on it, all the ones mentioned here and many more, ran together.

all together they got about 60% of the spyware off the comp, 40% or so was untouchable.. their conclusion is more work to be done on spyware removal programs but they definitely help.

You know whats funny about that...all spyware is designed for internet explorer.....

none for mozila firefox...it's open code, there is no point, the faults are fixed by thousand of amature programmers around the world as soon as they are exposed..

as opposed to microsoft IE, they have closed code, so it's a "challenge" to break it, and it's also the most popular by far, so the ad junkies haven't set their sights on firefox.

I've had to rebuld my computer too many times using IE, since firefox...nothing...I don't have to restart my pr0n/movie collection :)

Yes I've noticed that to be the case. It seems ok and does get better with time and "don't show this again" works good.

I got a pretty good Dell system. We all can't build our own PC's. Some of us have to buy them prebuilt.

Dell 9100 Dual core
2G Ram
250G HD
256... video card
Dual drives
20 ultrasharp monitor (awesome btw)
blah blah and some blah... For $1600 shipped... + tax

Don't get me wrong I picked out a dell for my parents, it's great stuff because they have good warrenty's, etc, for the casual internet user. I'm more of a gamer.

You comp sounds good. 2 gig ram? your set for 5 yrs at least.

Download firefox and you'll be straight. I run ad-aware and spybot every few months now and it's clear every time.

I dropped over 2k on mine, about 3 years ago, I figure if your going to make an investment, go all out and dont worry about it for 5-7 years. Computers though are different, they are crazy price differences...

Yeah, I like getting quality stuff once and hopefully having it last, but this time I went middle range to upper... Last PC was $3000+ in 1997 or 98 and I just replaced it with the Dell. It was a P2 400mhz. lol 10G HD. I know what I need now and this should do the job. Mostly family pic storing and printing and surfing.

I may get the firefox. I'll think about it.

Don't kill me for this question... Can AOL (Oh no!!!) be used with firefox? I have no idea how this stuff works. I just have way too much info (from 1998) invested in my AOL account to cancel it. I have my own high speed cable connection and use AOL for $8/month.

So can I still use that as my home page, or is that a stupid question?

So, you surf the internet through AOL's built in browser?

I haven't used AOL in years, but if you have high speed cable, you are always connected, so you can click on IE, or firefox, without running AOL and be on the "information superhighway"

You are surfing through AOL's built in browser? I mean $8 a month isn't so bad, what do you have on there that you can't transfer/save? Just links? Bookmarks? You can easily save all of those and bookmark them in firefox, or IE if you are so inclined...

IMO, if you aren't using AOL's chat rooms, etc, it's a huge waste of money....we all see the same thing. I have cable as well w/ out the $8 surcharge and I see the same shit you do.

Yes, bookmarks, links and stuff. About 100 million of them and my E-mail adress is all over the world (and Peru) at 214th hundred different accounts. Too much work to close everything out.. It's no big deal. If i can still get Firefox along with keeping AOL and use it easily, I will. Thanks big brosainouses! This thread helped me out. Honestly, I'm gonna stop locking threads so much.

I'm running ad aware se and firefox and have had no problems for almost 6 months. I use norton for virus protection and seem to stay clean, and trust me I'm all over the net.

By the way which camera did you go for?

I got the Canon Optura 600. $1000 with an extra battery and extra memory stick. I'm not liking it as much as the sony DCR PC 120BT I had, but it'll have to do.

BTW I just downloaded the firefox and I'm using it. I may get used to it. I already installed all the above stuff as well. I'm good to go. Who wants more K donated
? lol

If you are using firefox than check out some of the tips on here. I have used them and haven't had any problems. I look for the links.

I hit this up and it seems to help with no problems? Don't really understand it but no complaints yet.

Thanks, I just did that tweak. I'm not sure if it speeded things up or not. My pages loaded pretty instantly before... I'll see what happens.

sfmonster, Do you live in the states and do you want to buy my camera? I'd sell it at a discount if you want. I don't like it and want the Sony instead. It's still new, I snapped a few pics on the card with it, I did'nt even get the bill from the CC company yet. lol yes I did, but still....

Let me know.

lol @ AOl convinced you to keep their service for $8/month. I told you they wouldnt let you cancel!!! I too had AOL for over 5 yrs and just cancelled and went to Yahoo email account.

I did cancel, but i really needed all the settings and stuff, so I called them back to signup again. I figure it's an $8/month charge for my book-keeping. I have too many loose ends, links, accounts, favorites... etc. to drop them. I've been with them since 1997.

If I gradually shift everything over, in time, I'll cancel.

in time=16 years.
