SHBG & Estro - Are they correlated?

Is there a positive correlation between your SHBG and Estrogen levels?

i.e. if SHGB is high, estro will tend to be high as well and vice versa?

SHBG binds up to 98 percent of the steroid hormones in the blood including 5a-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), testosterone and androstenediol with particularly high affinity, and estradiol and estrone with slightly lower affinity. If SHBG is high It will "tie up" steroid hormones so I would wager that if you looked at only that, in a vacuum it would cause free test and estrogen to be less. However things arent always that simple or cut and dry. SHBG levels increase when estrogen levels are high, possibly as a mean of reducing estrogen levels by tieing up the hormones so that cant be aromatised (hypothosis)? Obesity can cause increased extrogen which in turn could trigger increased SHBG which in turn would reduce your free test and it its already low it would make things worse. All of your hormones work in a pretty complex interrelated fashion.

I would agree with your hypothesis. If you think about it, low SHBG would increase the available free test for aromatization in addition to binding less estro. Net result, inverse relationship between SHBG and estrogen. I know that's simplifying it a bit but it makes some logical sense to me.

Well, according to my bloods, rocdocs assumption would appear to be correct.

My SHBG was within range, but my E2 was double the high end... I would also guess that the ratio/relationship between SHBG and Estro is influenced by many other factors as Zygla suggested...

*Sigh* wish it was simple :)

if there's a rise in estro then there'a a need for more carriers like SHBG to bind with this hormone, just to simplify what zyg said.
