Shattered Amps

Just earlier I was pre-loading for the week and couldn't find my file so I'm working on trying to open an amp by scoring the top with a jagged knife. Well that didn't work so well so I just grabbed a pen cap and was trying to break it off. The damn amp shattered right in my fingertips and cut three of my fingers. So here I am picking glass out of my fingers and down one amp of test. DAMNIT!!! I've got to stop being so cheap and get an amp opener.

Anyone else ever shatter an amp in their hand?

Ha! Just yesterday! my next to last amp of Sust. Crushed the damn thing with my thumb trying to open it. And for a split second I thought about trying to get a pin and suck off what I could from the puddle on the table where the Sust landed!
Yeah man, thats a bitch ain't it. Those damned Organon amps are so thick though, my onma's from Jelfa are thinner and crack open perfect every time! Oh well, just be more careful next time.

You have to use a file to etch the neck of the amp, preferably a triangular file. Then, wrap the amp in a paper towel before you attempt to snap the top off so if it does break wrong, you don't cut yourself.

oh man guys, go order one of those amp openers. I fuckin love mine. so easy to use. I remember when I didn't have one and I was going through the same shit you guys are experiencing.

A bro on here suggested drilling a hole in a piece of wood and using that as an amp opener. I did it, and actually like it a lot more than the amp opener I bought. It seems to give a cleaner break.

yeah, but my amp opener has a little scoring mechanism that makes for a clean break.

Use a butter knife and smash the top. Never had one break.

I had the same problems with the ICNs. The only way I could get them open without shattering the whole amp was to just crush the top between my thumb and finger. I used a cloth to keep from cutting myself.

I find amp openers only helpful with hard to open amps. Amps that shatter still shatter in my amp opener.

If you're dealing with brittle amps you must score the shit out of them, then tape up the body of the amp with duct tape.

thats why i never get amps... lose half of them trying to pop the top off of 'em. i always wrap the bottom with a towle or sock or something, file the neck and use a pen cap... seems i end up crushing the bastards with my thumb and index finger while trying to snap the top off.

I always use a small needle file to score the neck, hold the amp in a cloth and snap the top off using the handle of the file (has a hole in it the perfect size)

using Jelfa Omnas were awsome! the amps just broke off super easy with using just a towel and some pressure

I like the tip about taping up the vial before breaking it. Big help. Karma for you!

This method works with those pesky amps:

sticky tape the amp up to the neck.. wrap sticky tape a few times round the amp... now when you break the amp, it might not break clearly, but the amp will not shatter into pieces or cut your hand, and gear will not be wasted.....

What i do is wrap my first finger around the amp then grab the top with my other hand and snap it off. If i tryed to do it this way with my thumb on the amp i would probley crush it.

I had the same problem with ICNs a while back so I went to the harware store and got a $3 glass cutter. Score the neck one or two times and it will practically fall off. Never had ANY problems since!!!

try using a glass cutter whatever the thickness of the amp may be.

I always use the top from a bic pen (bic = name of biro in UK not sure if available in USA but you get the idea). Place over top of amp and using leverage pull back and snap. Works every time and clean break.

Yeah, but the pen lid idea still requires that the ampule fractures cleanly around the neck. Some amps haven't been weakened around the neck during manufacture I notice... Indian Organon Sustanon comes to mind...

Sellotaping the body and using a pen lid might be good combo.
