The old coot might have started off on the wrong side of right, but he ended up being a man to be respected (despite some of his past acts or mores).

He liked the women and lived a healthy lifestyle. He never drank or smoked. He lived to 100 and proved that a healthy life full of hard work and passion will truly make you live forever.

Parachuted into Normandy on D-Day
Never went to Law school, still passed the Bar
At 66 married the 22 year old Miss SC
Amazing!

He was an unrepentant racist who only changed his tune when black voters took over his district.
As for hero status for getting married at 66 we have a double standard.
When Anna Nicole Smith married an older millionare, he was the laughing stock of the nation.

Good ridance. I don't want him dead, but I'm sure glad he's out of congress.

He's dead.

For those who may not be aware of that fact when they're reading this thread.

Just thought I'd make sure everyone was on the same page.

Politics aside, he is a man to look up to. A real MAN.

yep...thats the point...it aint about being popular, politically correct, or even being right when viewed by history...

its about staring your detractors in the eye and holding
onto your well reasoned beliefs...

He was a US senator for the state of SC. He didn't have a district.

As for his racism, yes he was one, but he changed his political beliefs when the times changed. Whether he was still a racist at heart, only he knows for sure. He helped a lot of people in SC, both black and white. I met the man several times and he seemed sincere enough.

And no, I never voted for him, he was too conservative for me.

He was the first senator I believe to hire a black to his staff... I dont know the man but he sure was around for a long, long time...
