secure mail

I received an E-Mail from someone I know but it was addressed to someone other than me. How can that happen? The "to" box was NOT my name. How can I receive it if that`s the case?

I`m not too familiar with secure mail so this might be a non-issue.

btw I have @EF address.

Was the actual SMTP address not yours or just the display name?

For instance the display name is anything the sender chooses to put in their address book for you. Let's say your name is "John Smith" and your address is [email protected]. I would be very easy for me to send you mail (on accident or purposefully) that looks like it was to "Alex Smith" but in the full header you would still see the correct [email protected].

If your are using hushmail you can check this by checking the "show actual message" box. Then you will see a bunch of lines like: for [email protected]; and somewhere there would be the incorrect "Alex Smith" in there. That text within the quotes is customizable by the sender and doesn't really matter.

Thanks that worked. It did show the other name when I clicked on "show actual message" box. I`ve received about 10 E-Mails from this person and this is the first time I got a different name than my own on there. strange...

Very helpful thank you for taking the time to explain

It sounds like you might also have been BCC'ed or CC'ed on the message.

i can send a mail to Jerkbox and under BC (blind coy) I can send it to george as well. Then George will see the email I sent "to: Jerkbox", but if it is a Blind Copy, JB wont know I sent it to GS. If I use CC instead, then JB and GS would see each others name.

Peace Out
