Because my job is boring most of the time? Yeah, I should be out there learning new things, I'm rotting in my chair as we speak, bleh.

FreakMonster: Do you do it? If so, then why if it's not OK?

Dr. M: Understandable... but you are being paid to work, even if that means to be bored, not to hang out on EF. Why does your boredom justify hanging out on EF?

This will be fun.. heh.

For professional folks, their work is often project oriented, which means there are busy times, and slow times. It's not like we work on an assembly line or something where the work is structured and constant.

I was off EF for a month or so while I started this new job and things were busy. Now things are slow and I get to spread my genius here. I have no ethical problem with that at all. I'm not paid to work every hour. I'm paid to complete a project by a certain date, which will happen whether I'm on here or not.

just like anything else I do:

i smoke weed - it's fun and addictive = I could get caught though
i jerk to porn - it's fun and addictive = I could be seen though
i surf EF - it's fun and addictive = I could get caught though

Hell, it's just another fun thing i do without thinking of consequences.

Its not justified, I do spend time keeping up on computer stuff, but overall yes my time is being wasted here and I'm certainly not challenged. I've been here 2 years and I'm ready to MOVE ON, this job needs to go to someone else, and I need to get my brain and body in shape instead of just sitting at a desk 80% of the time.

I've considered getting out of computers because it bothers me so much, I work best when I'm ACTIVE. That is how alot of us are that work here, things are a bit slow I guess you could say, I work at an NPO, I get payed fairly for sure but its a different culture at an NPO versus a normal business. I've been at .COMs where we did similar, played hacky sack for 2 hours a day, surfed alot, damn I miss the hacky sack :(

So, would you not be on EF during work if you were paid hourly, but had ample time to complete your tasks?

Example: You have to do tasks A, B, C, and D @ $10/hr and you have been given no deadline. You estimate that a mere mortal employee (i.e. not gymtime) would probably finish these tasks in 3 days and receive the same pay, but you know that you can do it in 1 or 2.

Is it therefore OK for you to post for an hour or two throughout the day if you finish the tasks in 2 days? Would 24 hours x $10 = $240 of pure work be more or less ethical than 14 hours x $10 = $140 of work/EF with the same tasks accomplished?

It's not ok because I am surfing EF while on company time. Technically I can be fired for that. I surf anyways because sometimes work slows down.

I used to do it all the time when i worked for worldcom. Looking back on it i'm glad i did, and i can't wait to surf elite at my next job.

I blame the advent of the internet for the ineffective workforce in America today.

Ok, I do and it "IS"ok and ain't no bitch where I work gonna tell me I can't.. hehe Afterall I am the corporate CFO and one of the principal owners... Ahhh, time to go boss around the peons that work for me .. lol

HappyScrappy: You have been vaporized by my patented "back door laser beam defender."

MrMuscle: This thread only applies to people with computers and no hot chicks at work. =) What have I been up to? School/Work/Girlfriend. I have almost no free time left, so whatever free time I do have is spent on Elite or reading a book since by the time I get ready to start something else, it's already time for more school/work/girlfriend related things.

FreakMonster: Keep in mind that I'm talking about ethically OK and not "does my boss care?" If you do in fact think that it's ethically wrong, then what allows you to do it? I may have done things in the past that other people consider wrong, but I have made every effort to never do something that I personally think is wrong, because I find such behavior to be the root of all evil.

------------

I think the whole right or wrong about it is what you bring to the company. Is the company better off with you screwing around at work, with you working at full blast for 8 hours a day, or with someone else in your position? Is too little pay an excuse? How about lack of output from others? If you work in department A of the company and the people in department B, who are fundamental to the profitability of the company, aren't doing shit, does that make it OK for you to not do shit because the shit that you do is enough to earn your keep?

Hmmm.

This question makes my head hurt.

OK OK, lemme see here. First of all, I am paid hourly though my work is project based. And I do have ample time to complete my tasks so I'm not sure if I understand the first question. If I were say an hourly staff employee doing data entry, for example. And my productivity depended on how much typing I could do in a given day, I would not be on EF because it would directly and negatively impact it.

As for your example, I guess it's difficult for me to think in terms of a basic hourly accumulation of work with a corresponding wage. Like I said before, most professional people work on a project basis where the line between doing real work and simply screwing off is blurred at best. I haven't done real hourly work in years, so goofing off during my down time is as normal as working 10 or more hours in a day (often not billable) during crunch times.

So I guess I look at work in terms of this: The employer says: do a, b, and c in x amount of time for y amount of money. I can either do that or I can't. If I can and I find myself working well ahead of the deadline, then I have no ethical qualms about spending time on EF learning about the size of SSME's penis.

I thought it said "snapper" too when I first posted. then I looked at sites that had lyrics.

I don't know which song # it is, but I'm pretty sure it is the one where Rob Van Winkle sings on it - who is better known as "Vanilla Ice" and it is a song that he would later put out on one of his failed recent albums, calling the song "Prozac" (or maybe "Prosac"??)
I like the BHG version better because it has funny lines in it.

get off my thread bitch!!!!!!

who sings that song that goes "hit my with your best shot" something something "yeah come on and hit me" something something "fire awaaaaay"

that song reminds me of the abuse that you deserve Mr. Fancypants.

Happy that is the one. It was my favorite song off the album.

Hit me with best shot I am pretty sure was Pat Benitar.

I would like to be on while at work. I would like to get to know the guys and gals better than I do by spending more time on the board. I am only on about an hour at most each day currently. The monitoring software that my employers use means that they are serious about controlling any such traffic. To lessen the possibility of getting busted down for it I would like to be able to use the platinum access that was supposed to be working.....
