Scheduled "cheats"???

Does everyone here schedule a cheat day or meal?

I have a very hard time allowing myself to do this...yet I know that it is important.

Good post Nichole. I'm in the same boat. I've been doing really good lately, but after walking down the Easter Aisle yesterday at the store, I would do anything for a peanut butter egg, cadbury egg, solid milk chocolate bunny!

I didn't, but boy.... I could tear it up!!!! ugh!

Can you cheat? Is it totally bad to have some chocolate to get it out of my head?
 
i think it's about knowing yuor limits and the affect that the cheat will have on your ultimate goals
 
My scheduled cheat night is Friday (w/ the exception of this week - I had to move it to Saturday for a special occasion). I'm noticing the longer I do this each cheat meal is slightly healthier than the cheat meal from the week before. And I'm eating smaller portions and bringing the rest home for my b/f to eat for lunch the next day.

I KNOW!!! I couldn't believe EVERYwhere I turned there was something ...pizza, donuts, chocolate, bagels, muffins, aisles of chips etc.

Thank god I have this newly developed self control that's for sure. For the 1st time since I saw "SuperSize me" I was disgusted at the unhealthiness of our Nation...

Just so you know, a cheat meal doesn't have to be an all out pig fest of everything in site. Since I enjoy wine, a good cab is usually my cheat...i.e. last night this was my cheat meal

You need to refeed your body. Long term dieting can affect you leptin levels - the hormone that dictates how hungry you are (basically). If your levels go low - that is when the overwhelming urges come in. If you schedule weekly refeeds, the desire to cheat becomes less and less. PLUS, it is essential to keep energy levels up, so your workouts can be 100%.

I *always* schedule refeeds. But there is a difference in HOW to approach it. I don't recommend a full day of all out eating, although that is what I did and I still lost over 30lbs and about 10%BF. But I think that is too much.

Most people take 1 meal 1-2x a week and eat whatever they want.

It is a smart thing to do, and a necessary thing. If you are truly eating clean, then one meal 1-2x a week will not break your diet or hinder your results. It will only help you - mentally and physically.

Everything in moderation - why spend your life desiring things and depriving yourself to the extent that you end up miserable? Silly.
 
Everyone as made some good points.

I defintely believe that "cheating" should consist of one meal- or one item (ie firecracker's peanut butter egg, lol)

For the past few months my b/f and I had a sunday morning ritual of pancakes or wafflles.

Sometimes though...it is hard for me to do mentally b/c I feel like it's going to "mess me up"...however...like Daisy said w/o that you tend to spend all this time desiring. I was also always taught that cheating once a week (not all out pig out...one meal) ia actually good for your metabolism and progress.

Just curious how everyone else dealt with that issue.

BUNNY----that was a GREAT documentary. My b/f and I bought that and I reccomend it to clients all the time.
Also, I'd love to see that old post if you happen to find it. :)

Agree 100%. Today is my day to cheat. That peanut butter egg is still whispering in my ear....mmm....we'll see. I'm excited, but at the same time worried it'll ruin my diet. I'm going to do it though! :)

LOL, if one meal totally ruins your diet, then your diet isn't tight and training isn't well-prepared and executed.

DO NOT view it as a 'cheat' - you are NOT cheating on ANYTHING. 'Cheat' is SO negative and the term forces you to think you have failed or are doing something wrong.

You are having a 're-feed'. You are refeeding yor body necessary things to help it work properly and run efficiently. This is a NECESSARY thing to do - physically and mentally.

This is all in moderation. Nothing is off-limits. It just needs to be planned and thought out. There is nothing wrong with ANY food, IMO.

I agree -- Plus if you're going to "splurge" on something, make it something special.... For example, last nite T & I went out to dinner and I had 2 glasses of an amazing new Shiraz they got and 2 special coffee drinks they made me with chocolate cream :p The food they make & the way they prepare it just makes me want to run into the kitchen & give Noah (the chef) a great big hug. Food is what I'm "into" -- I love how it feels, smells, tastes, etc.....

And as DG said in a previous post, why live your whole life in a state of deprivation?? That's just no fun at all....
 
I cant afford to cheat .. i am 49 1/2 getting ready for a figure show.. I have
hypothyriod and I AM MENPAUSAL 2 strikes against me and belly fat... anyway
i buy the low carb whole wheat tortillas (mission at walmart 80 cal a piece tons of fiber and protein) anyway i place it in a nonstick pan and i put natural peanut butter and 1 tablespoon of splenda jelly polanders 10 cal 5 carb.. heat it roll it up
WOW DOES THAT TAKE THAT CRAVING AWAY.. try it

That's so funny b/c one of my favorite cheat treats is a rice cake or 2 with soynut butter and sugar free rasberry jelly (I recently discovered a very annoying allergy to peanuts/peanut butter and almond butter :( ...and I luuuuuvvvvvvvvvv p/b).
 
That's what gets really funny about clean dieting. Your idea of a cheat starts changing. You may fantasize about a banana split or something obscenely rich, but in reality you can pretty much get gastronomic orgasm from something like a rice cake & PB/J. Frankly I get really excited about a perfectly grilled hunk of steak or chicken. Lately I've been grilling orange roughie and its the best stuff i've had in months. I also consider oatmeal with Splenda to be a big hit. (Wohooo!)

:) sorry Bunny! Well, here's the scoop! Yesterday was my cheat day, so for dinner went to the Outback and tore it up! Even bread and butter! Whoa! Then it was off to Marble Slab Creamery for some ice cream! It was awesome, but not as awesome as my cravings were telling me it was going to be. Weird huh? Anyway, back to the diet, the wierd thing is I don't feel fat or bloated today. I totally thought I would. It was great!

Oh Sassy, excellent thread you posted about cheating, right on! Thank you for helping us realize that it's ok and important. Sometimes I forget that it is important for your body and not a negative thing!

I wish I could say the same. I had my planned cheat meal at this great Italian restaurant. I woke up at 3 am this morning and basically my body rejected everything I ate. It just did not agree with my stomach. I've noticed that every week, my body did not want the "good" stuff as much. Well, I figured I wouldn't pay that any mind this week b/c this was a special occasion. Boy was I wrong. Next time I will not let my eyes pick out my meal and take my stomach into consideration and get something a little better.

:( sorry to hear that! I hope you feel better asap! I was surprised myself, I totally thought I would have an uspet tum tum. My food was pretty plain, not like Italian with spices and stuff. Could have been the heavy sauce and stuff.

Just sip lots of water and take it easy today.

oh my... I have so long way to go...
 
Don't rush to get there. Damn when ChefWide starts going on about some recipe like steak ... see I just put some Montreal Steak seasoning on mine, slap it on the grill, flip, eat. For him, its like pre-date anticipation, being late by 30 min because yo didn't have just the right outfit, the guy brings a rose, you melt, he kisses you, you melt, he continues kissing you, you are still melting, you both start shaking, don't bother moving it upstairs, start tearing about the clothes, christening every piece of furniture in the house, scaring the cat and THEN going upstairs to collapse for a few hours and starting all over again, then finish up in the shower and a fluffy towel, followed by x hours of blissful sleep and walking up in each others arms, and by some miracle, the house gnomes have already got the Starbuck's coffee brewing and some eggs & oatmeal are the table.

Who's steak would you rather have?

Now let's talk about the cheat dessert that follows that steak. In my house, "cheat desser" is like 1 tbsp of natty peanut butter. In Cheffy's story, its probably more like a peanut butter and death by chocolate cheesecake. (I cant' handle going into more detail than that ... but it involves lying in bed & lighting up a cigarette afterwards...)

So yea, definitely dont' go rushing to the point of sugar rush when you eat one raisin.

P.S. I cannot even stand the sight or smell of fast food at this point...subway MAYBE but I even have to close my office door if anyone is eating BK, McD's, Wendy's etc remotely close to me

I'm personally a fan. I get a cheat meal on either Saturday or Sunday (depending on my schedule). I can stay out of junk all week if I can have it once on the weekend. I've been having my dad do that with sweets and it's really helped him to stick with his diet.

I really enjoy what I eat though-- especially salads. On Fridays I order a salad for lunch instead of bringing one in. The funny thing is that I'd rather have that salad than ice cream, pizza, or almost anything else. :)
