saving files...

can files be saved if they only want to be saved as .dat?

am i SOL or is there any trick to getting them to save in their proper formats? i really need these ones.

.dat files are usually only temp files that the program uses while open.

they get removed on cleanup when you close the program - but if your computer crashes or gets shut off prior to that, then they will get left behind.

either that or you are working with digital audio. which I don't think you are.

I emailed your work account, but I forgot today is Boxing Day in your world.

indeed it is...

so essentially i'm SOL?

i have a copy of the email the files are from at work and i'm hoping that one will be ok.

I've never heard of someone havin gas much of a hard time with files as you - are you sure you are doing the process correctly?

when I was in tech support in college, you'd hear people having bizzarre problems and then you'd watch them use the computer and it was always user error (assuming the program worked for others)...
don't know.

um i forwarded the emails to home... went to open them and all but this one email will save as their proper formats, so no i'm not a retard.

hang on, i'll forward it to you at work.

i can manage opening files on a computer... really. ask me to do something complex with it and perhaps then i'd be a retard with it, but i think i can handle just saving files. thanks for the heads up though.

calm your lardbutt down.
I emailed you back.

they are just text files - open them in notepad or textpad (textpad.com), or wordpad (wordpad and notepad are under the accessories section of the start menu)

i know they are text files.

every time i double click them to save them on my desktop they want to save as .dat

i changed it to .txt and it's all fucked up... did you get a better look at it than that?

can you not get to the text?
I can just get the text and send that to you if you like.

the text was a description of an assignment it looked like.

"all fucked up" - but you can still see the text - it just has gibberish in there as well b/c there is extra information that is being stored - it is what a pdf or doc looks like when you open it in a straight text editor.

if there are embedded images, then it might matter - but if you only need the text, then it is right there. just scroll down.
