Saudis plan to sue U.S. over Sept 11

Thursday, August 22, 2002 at 09:30 JST
RIYADH — A Saudi lawyer is planning to file more than 15 lawsuits against the U.S. government and other parties for causing physical and psychological damages to his clients, preventing them from completing their studies and damaging their reputation through the media.

Katib Fahd Al-Shammary, the lawyer, said Wednesday that he had collected powers of attorney from Saudi victims and that he would file the suits within two months, seeking damages.

He spelled out the reasons that delayed the filing of suits, saying there was lack of clarity about procedures at U.S. courts and prisons, disappearance of certain evidence and confiscation of the victims' IDs.

"Another important reason is lack of money to follow up court proceedings," Shammary said and called upon Saudi authorities and charities to support the plan.

"We need money to appoint American lawyers to defend our cases and ensure good media coverage to influence U.S. public opinion," he added.

Shammary's clients include Saudi students who have been prevented from continuing their studies in the United States and jailed in U.S. prisons for different durations without leveling any charges against them.

He said he would file lawsuits on behalf of those Saudis whose names and pictures were published in U.S. media as suspects in the Sept 11 terror attacks while they were outside the U.S. at the time of attacks.

Shammary said the compensations to be sought through the lawsuits would be realistic.

"We have been contacting law offices in the Kingdom, Qatar, Kuwait and even in the U.S. to make use of their expertise in support of the case," he explained.

Shammary is a member of the committee of lawyers appointed to defend Arab prisoners in Guantanamo. The committee, which is chaired by Najeeb Al-Nuaimi, a Qatari, plans to file 80 lawsuits next month.

The Saudi lawsuits come in the wake of a lawsuit filed by relatives of the victims of Sept 11 attacks against Saudi charities and foreign organizations and individuals seeking trillions of dollars in damages.

"This is yet another part of a series of accusations which started after Sept 11 against Islamic charities," Secretary-General of the International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO) Adnan Basha said about the U.S. lawsuit.

IIRO, one of several Islamic organizations charged in the lawsuit filed on Thursday, says it is active in the field of charity and relief works mostly for orphans in about 95 countries.

"Our work is official. Our financial records are well monitored and audited by international auditors and in cooperation with governments," Basha added.

Last year, IIRO spent some $33 million on 2,800 projects and more than 44,000 orphans. It maintains offices in many countries, mostly in Africa and Asia.

They want to influance public opinion?? Don't they know many people here hate Arabs now...Fuck them, I wouldnt let them have the dingleberries off my ass.

well the saudi princes are being sued so i guess this is just balancing out the flow of money from one side into the other sides lawyers pockets

i do think they are right though. imagine if you were completely innocent, were detained without charge, got kicked out of uni as a result and had your name and photo published on a newspaper saying you had something to do with being a terrorist

you're telling me u wouldnt sue? you think because they are arabs they shouldn't sue and should take that kind of punishment? they have EVERY right to, the legitimacy of their claim will hopefully be decided by an un-bias court

No, I would definitely sue if I was them, I'm not knocking their hustle. But as a tax payer I'm footing the bill so I think that's bullshit and I hope they lose. They're lucky we didn't put everyone who's ever eaten a falafel in concentration camps like we did the Japanese during world war II.

sorry but they were arabs. You chose to come in America then assume the risks. What about all the shit going on there ? Do you think they would treat you right if you were arrested there ? No. So they dont deserve any better.

lol@falafel

i still hope they win. who;s fault is it. governments......now if it can be shown that the government had good reason to arrest and hold them, and will produce those record in court then i'm s little sypathetic to the us government.

but if they hide behind national security as a reason to not disclose these secrets, orgive no reason or a lame reason for not charging these people and holding them without charge hen i do hope their lawsuits are successful. you might be having to pay for it, but if its someones fault its someones fault

as for the newspapers, they are a privately owned organisation. its defammation of character, and i hope they get taken to the cleaners, most newspapers deserve it- again if the names were government provided and just listed as suspects then i;d feel a little sympathy. but they didnt have to print faces and they should have printed same page retractions

they better do or i would sue them until their ears bled :D

whether they were citizens or not they are allowed certain rights. when thy arrived they had theirrights. after sep-11 they seemingly lost those rights. its unfair to ask them to totally uproot their lives due to the actions of a minority. ok, some may have terrorist links....but unless u can prove those links you shouldnt punish people for it and then expect no repercussions

like i said the lawsuit will determine whether they have been wronged and if it is iased i am sure they will take it to international appeal

This is justice for American immigrants in Saudi Arabia

"We know that after 60 Minutes declined to air an interview with a Saud family torture victim who had a nervous breakdown, the Saud family shifted its torture of US citizens to mind altering tortures so as to compromise credible interviews. Stephen Emerson in American House of Saud says:"The often brutal treatment of American citizens incarcerated in Saudi Arabia is a major scandal, but neither the American embassy in Riyadh nor the State Department has ever issued any public criticism of Saudi arrests---of which there have been many----or even commented on this as a general problem. An even greater problem encountered by Americans arrested in Saudi Arabia is the general indifference to their plight by the American embassy and consulates."

I am not super informed about the whole situation but from what I've seen and read, I wouldn't mind supporting an invasion of Saudi Arabia and taking their oil, or, better yet, developing a different power source and then invading because of their support of terrorism.

again another failue by the american government

yues the saudi's are the bad guys in this, there is no question of that, but all to often western powers will let its citizens eat shit rather than rock the boat...

It's better safe than sorry. Let them catch them all now and sort them out later.

If they want to sue, they can go after the university's that kicked them out-or they can sue the news papers for printing their pictures..but stay away from my money.

Maybe our government was over aggressive in finding terrorists, but how many positive leads were gained from this?? From what I read this witch hunt turned up a lot of viable sources. The media only reports nationally about the fuck ups that happen, but what about all the accomplices they caught using these tactics? Last week they arrested an Egyptian guy not far from my home who supplied Drivers Licenses to a few of the Sept. 11th hijackers. Of course there is going to be a margin of error when looking for people responsible and some people might get caught up in the investigations that are innocent. But for every few people that were mistakenly detained, there are many who are either directly or indirectly involved. Whether they supplied information to the terrorists or funding through bogus charities. You never hear about all the good our government has done since Sept 11th. They are working around the clock thwarting plans of would be terrorism thanks to the tactics they are using. People can complain about loosing their civil liberties, but what good are they when your dead with your body parts strewn all over the place after a terrorist bombing.

This is the same American Embassy that allowed any Saudi who wanted to to come to America without even having to wait in line for a visa. It is time that we start treating the Saudis like the ememies that they are! We are the ones who gave and built for them the technology to extract the oil. They then took these oil fields without giving us compensation. I still hold a grudge against these fuckers for the oil embargo of the 70's!!
