Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & CA Bound

Sassy69

New member
* EDIT - 6/29/06 -- for the record, competition has been put off until some later date -- I'm trying to get myself to the other side of the country in a place I want to live & w/ a job I want to have. *

Once again on the road to competition. Another refocus back to BB as certain of my respected mentors admit to me that I am "not girlie enough" to do figure.... and I happened to be qualified for the NPC Master's Nationals this yr in July. So after exiting my last interesting position of employ I have more time to focus.

For ref, here's my last log where I was looking to do a figure show and my sporadic but most recent posts on my progress (or lack thereof):

http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4884697#post4884697

Been experimenting w/ a new training routine & for a week so I guess now is as good a time as any to start up for real. The diet has been very clean but a bit random, tomorrow starts the scheduled diet. I am including the caveat that I'm also job hunting & looking outside of my current locale so a large-scale move may impact my goals, or not.

Target show: NPC Masters Nationals (women's BB) ==> about 17 weeks out.
Date: July 22-23
Where: Pittsburgh

Other dates in the vicinity:
- NPC Southern States: July 14-15 (Ft. Lauderdale) - oh yea, I turn 41 this weekend too
- NPC Battle of Dixie: July 29 (Hoover, AL) -- this depends on where I live in 4 months....

Current stats:
bf ~20% (not formally measured yet)
Wt: 162 lb
(Height: 5'7")

Target stats (show day):
bf: 7-8%
wt: 135-140 -ish

Typical supps right now:
- SesaPure - Ulter's miracle supp
- Glucorell - r-ala
- Thermorexin or NYC+ - thermo
- Whatever Prenatal vitamins I have right now - just a beefed up multi, not to get pregnant.
- grape seed extract - anti-ox
- green tea extract - anti-ox, AM kick in the pants
- Cardio Breeze - AM kick in the pants
- Levorex - all around good stuff
- Oxycalm (to try cuz Buns said its good stuff....!)
- ALTYR
- Bev Intl Ultra 40s (liver tabs - extra protein source)
- Bev Intl Mass Aminos
- Nature's Greens (or whatever you call them --- greens supp in addition to veggies)
- GNC Digestive Enzymes & Beano -- yea, to handle those damn high broccoli days...

Couple general guidelines:
- each protein meal ~ 35 g protein
- total cals probably between 1800-2200 (need to lock into Fitday to get exact, but not today)
- complex carbs = oatmeal & sweet potatos - everything else tends to irritate my stomach.
- water - around 1.5 gal / day

Sometimes grapefruit in the morning. Miss24k had a question about this. My diets are based on stuff from Beverly International (props to Quadsweep & Quadsweep's Sister on my guidance here). The grapefruit is a bit different from most diets that will tell you no fruit because of the simple sugars. Here however, grapefruit & kiwi are two of those low-GI fruits that have been shown to help w/ digestion. So for the low amount of sugar vs the apparent benefit, right now I don't think it hurts to include some fruit which also gives the added benefit of including some natural enzymes which the body uses to shuttle out the daily waste.

26 Mar 2006 (Sunday)

Diet: (this is really random cuz I woke up waaay late today)
Meal 1: 11 am
1/2 container of tofu + 1 scoop Bev Intl Ultra Size
1/2 grapefruit + splenda
coffee

Meal 2: 2 pm
1 1/2 ground turkey patties
1 c broccoli
3 oz sweet potato

Meal 3: 5 pm - pre workout
1 1/2 ground turkey patties
3 greens tabs -- wanted to pass on the broccoli before training because its been doing a number on my stomach lately & no time to "digest" prior to training.

Meal 4: 8 pm - post workout
2 scoops Bev Intl Ultra Size + water - PWO shake (BLECH btw - not the Bev stuff, just shakes in general I have a hard time chugging these days..)

Meal 5: 9:00 pm
2 ground turkey patties
1 c broccoli
1 tbsp ANPB

Training: Chest & Bis
Notes:
- reversing my usual and going for higher wts on first set instead of ramping up over 3 sets
- much more geared towards super & giant sets for increased cardio effect - not really focused on mass so much as shape & developing better sweep & fullness.

5 min warmup: treadmill
incline press: warm up sets of bar/20 x 2
Giant Set: (3 sets of 12 reps each)
- incline press: 20/12, 15/12, 10/12 (this is the bar + wts on 1 side, e.g. 20/12 = 40 lb bar + 20 lb on each side = 80 lb)
- incline DB fly: 25/12, 25/8 + 20/4, 20/15 (this is wt of 1 DB)
- flat bench press: 20/12 (this is bar + wts on 1 side)
- cable x-over - standing upright to hit upper chest, shoulders: 20/12, 15/12 x 2 (note - for some reason our cables are wted very heavy - normallly this is a 40 lb wt for me)
Super Set: (3x, 12 reps)
- Preacher EZ bar curl: 40/12 50/12 40/12
- DB Hammer curl: 25/12 x 2, 20/12 -> 15/10 -> 10/15 -> 5/15 (burnout set)
Hi Cable bis: 15/12 x 2, 15/12 -> 10/10 -> 5/15 (burn out set, same comment about the heavier wts on the cable frame)

Cardio: 30 min LifeFitness Elliptical (watching Planet of the Apes in the "cardio theater"!)

YEA!! I am so excited to follow your log and your progress Sassy. I have been following all of your responses and suggestions to other woman on this board and have really grown to respect you and what you have to say and the input you give! I can't wait to learn a TON from how YOU personally cut and prepare for competition!! ;)

Good luck on the job hunting!

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

LOL! Thx --- sooo hard getting focused and that whole job thing may override the whole show thing. But we'll see. I'm excited. I came really close to never wanting to step into a gym again as a result of my job so in that respect I'm starting to enjoy it all again and keeping my goals focused on challenging myself instead of getting caught up in whatever happens at the competitions. The Southern States show is my personal nemesis so I'm really hoping I can pull that off as well 1 week before the target show. We'll see! Might have to get a new Pre-judge suit made as I have a complete set of figure suits right now. And already having fun running posing routines against different music!

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

Good Luck Sassy!!

Any pics of you for us to see? :)

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

Nothing really special to look at right now. Not really goign to worry about it for a few more weeks after I get my approach down solid.

How much protein/fat/carbs do you take during the day?

Oh and Happy Birthday for the coming weekend in case I forget. ;)

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

No idea - i'd have to run the fitday numbers. Probably going to be around 50/30/20.

The bday isnt' until July - just thougth would be interesting to spend my 41st bday winning the overall at the Southern States show this yr!

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

Awesome....I should be able to swing the Pittsburgh show if you decide to do it. It's only 40 bucks on SouthWest to get there most of the time.

I had a question on what flavor you prefer with the Bev'l Ultimate Protein. I'm thinking about Cookies N Cream. Have you tried that one yet? I posted in my log that I may be going the Beverly route for the next 4-6 weeks since I really need to take my diet to the next level (and have heard very good things about Quadsweep & Quadsweep's sis) so I'm supplement shopping right now.

Look forward to following your progress!

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

Hmmmm......Treil on the 15th and Sassy on the 22nd-23rd...

Let the scheming begin...

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

Finally! ;) I shall go into lurk mode in your journal once again. I am glad you started a new one...I got tired of reading and rereading the old one!

Good luck, Sassy!

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

You look fabulous at 40 and I can only imagine how awesome you are going to look by your 41st Birthday. :arty: Thank you for continuing to be an inspiration for those of us just starting or re-starting our journey to fitness!

(I turn 40 in June so you know I'll be reading your log! :ryanh: )

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

:elephant: Go Sassy!
I think it was a great decision to return to BB! Good luck! This is going to be fun .

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

Ahhh thanks for the answer Miss Sassy pants :)

And best of luck on your road to the stage, you're show date in my birthday so you're going to be amazing, with your sexy azz self ;)

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

I'm glad you're back to BB. I read your other log and it pained me to think that you would have to "lose" all that muscle you put on, just to fit into the figure ideal.

I'm not trying to offend anyone, BTW. Figure girls work their asses off (almost literally :) ). It's just that I've always admired women in BB. Especially when they carry all that muscle and still look feminine.

I"ve bookmarked you.

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

I've just read through your progress and log, amazing!!! Well done, and good luck in prep. for the Comps as well!

cheers

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

Awesome, Sassy! I'll be at your PA show for sure! :) I, like many others here, can't wait to see YOU do this. I've heard all about it, read a little of your old log, I've seen the pics.....but now in REAL TIME!!! I'm so excited!!! snort snort :lmao:

PS....to be honest. You strike me as a "strong girl" not a "figure girl" anyway. GO SASSY!!!! :twirl:

Pa where in Pa that's right next to me. Only like 1 1/2 hrs from Pittsburg.

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

LOL -- the figure vs BB discussion --- I agree - Figure Girls rock! The training is just as brutal as BB but w/ different goals - or not - some girls still need to build that base to get on stage. "cute" & "lean" isnt' good enough for figure. But the competitoin itself I just find annoying & thankless. That's just me. BB, regardless of how you place and all that, is much more fulfilling.

The show is the NPC Masters Nationals in Pittsburgh - you can google it to find the location. I'm not familiar w/ the area so I'm not sweatign the exactly location just yet. You can check also on www.npcnewsonline.com & click on the 2006 Schedule link to see the specifics.

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

3/27/06 - Monday

Notes: overslept again .. until noon  -- still sort of wallowing around in "wtf do I do w/ myself now?" but its slowly focusing... The gym helps alot.

Diet:

Meal 1: 12 noon
1/2 c oatmeal + 1 scoop Bev Intl Ultra Size protein mix
1 whole egg + 3 egg whites
4 cups of coffee - lasts about 2 hrs - note - in reality this probably goes a certain way towards keeping me from getting hungry -- which for 5 hrs isn't good...

Meal 2: 5 pm (yea - I was so transfixed on EF today, I forgot to eat, or move, or anything... )
2 eggs + 7 egg whites (no other food in the house)
3 oz sweet potato

Meal 3: 8 pm (PWO)
2 scoops Bev Intl Ultra Size

Meal 4: 9 pm
4 oz top round (hot off the grill!)
1 c broccoli

11 pm - 1 Fresca

Training: Back, Hams, Calves
5 min treadmill warmup
DLs - warm up - lift off 8" squat box - bar/20 x 2 -- I go light w/ anything w/ that bar -- lower back is squirrelly right now.
DLs (lift off 8" squat box): 10/12 20/12 20/12 (means bar + wts on 1 side of the bar - sum total = 80 lb)
Giant set: (x3, 12 reps each)
- assisted chins: 50/12, 75/12, 80/12
- Hammer Strength row: 55/12, 75/12 55/15
- Hammer Strength hi row: 45/12 55/10, 45/12
- DB pull over: 45/12 x 3
Giant Set:
- good mornings: bar/15 x 3 (this is another of those squirrely lower back things so I take it easy and focus on pulling from the hams)
- cable pull thru: 65/15x3 (same effect as reverse hypers but my quads still hurt too much to use them as the pivot point on the reverse hyper bench -- Note to self: do hams before quads...)
- lying leg curl: 80/12 x 3 (these are actually pretty strong but didnt' feel like going higher)
Calves:
- walking calves: 45 plates/50 steps x 3
- seated sliding calf raises: 135/30 x 3

Skipped cardio due to gettign stupid on carb crash & calves started cramping.

I'm sort of testign the waters w/ this training schedule -- see how I feel but generally doing the super & giant sets. I was definitely getting a cardio workout today.

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

Way to go Sassy! I am pretty much in the same boat as u. I had surgery 6 weeks ago and now my bf has gone up cause I had to take time off. I have shoots the end of July so I need to ghet from 20 percent to about 8 or 9 percent. Im right there along with ya baby! I start tomorrow.

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

I dropped 8-9% bf in 9 weeks so I really dont' see a problem w/ 12-13% in 16-18 weeks. But half of it is setting up the burning efficiently.

28 March 2006 (Tuesday)
- another day of waaay late sleep in. Working on that - desperately need to get my car in to the shop tomorrow morning to check some noises....

Diet:
Meal 1: 3 pm
1/2 c oatmeal + 1 scoop Bev Intl Ultra Size
1 whole egg + 3 egg whites

Meal 2: 6 pm
4 oz grilled chicken
3 oz sweet potato
1 c broccoli + Beano (!)

Meal 3: 10 pm PWO
2 scoops Bev Intl Ultra Size + 15 g glutamine (loading phase) + water

Meal 4: 11 pm
4 oz top round steak
1 c broccoli

Meal 5: 12:40 am
1 tbls ANPB

Training: Shoulders/Delts + Tris + Abs
5 min treadmill warm-up
DB shoulder press (press direction more outward than straight up): warm up 15/20 x2
Giant Set:
- DB shoulder press: 20/12 25/12 x2
- DB side laterals: 15/12 x 2 10/12
- DB rear laterals: 15/12 x 2, 10/12
Smith Shrugs: 45/12 x 3 (means bar + wt of 1 side = 130 lb) - last 4 of each set, pull + hold
Reverse Cable x-overs: 10/12 x 2 + 10/8 (anythign w/ the cables in my gym seems over weighted - these are usually more around 30 lb per grip)
Giant Set: Tris:
- Skull crushers (EZ bar) + close grip press: 60/12 x 2 50/12
- Cable Tri Press: 50/12 x 2 40/12
- DB tri kickbacks (pronated alt w/ supinated grip aka "Oprahs & Dr. Phils") - 15/12 x 3
Abs:
- fitball cable crunches: 45/20 x 3
- cable crunches: 75/20 x 3, right side + left side: 75/10 each side

30 min cardio - LifeFitness Elliptical -steady pace.

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

Just out of curiousity, how many calories do you try to take in durning a cutting cycle?

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

Normally its around 1700-1800. Right now its supposed to be around 2200, but will reduce soon.

I know that the bolded portion looks so basic and understandable, but would you be kind enough to elaborate on that? I think a lot of people would be interested in the concepts and thought process behind that.

:)

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

My competition dates:
July 21-22 - NPC Teen Collegiate Masters National Championships - Pitthsburgh (where in Pittburgh dunno yet)
July 14-15 - NPC Southern States (Ft. Lauderdale)

other than that, dunno. All subject to my job situation.

Diet: Time to set up efficient burning --- If you are just starting a new diet or made a significant change to what you are currently doing, your body needs some time to adjust to the new changes. If the diet is tuned enough so that it truly works for you (some just don't so you'd have to see how you respond) so you can't expect to change a diet or start a diet & see dramatic results immediately. Sometimes you can drop a bunch of water weight immediately, but for continued efficient burning you need to give your body enough time, keeping the diet or the change consistent for long enough for metabolism to become predictable and spot on.

Does that make any sense? The challenge is getting it consistent - this is critical to effective burning (i.e. your body has "trained" itself to expect the particular diet /schedule and is now running as if it expects to have that same schedule. If you have a food panic and throw down a bunch of crap, it throws off the expected schedule and throws your system for a loop while it tries to respond to what it didnt' expect - so in a sense it has to step back start re-expecting the consistency again -- i.e. sets back the period of successful consistency). And along with that, people tend to screw up the consistency because they haven't really established the HABIT of eating on the new program / schedule for usually 2-3 weeks. Because its foreign to them, they aren't sure if they like it, they haven't mastered managing the food panics, or the schedule is new & maybe needs to be worked on to fit into the rest of the current lifestyle.

VPX DIETEX!!!!!! Its a hoodia-based product - doens't always work for everyone but it made my contest prep last spring sooo easy - killed my appetite flat dead.

Thx girl -- its a new experience every time. For me the biggest challenge is just the consistency in life -- I have been in "transition mode" for like 3 yrs now & it gets friggen old. WHen do I get to meet a nice guy, get married & have a normal boring life in Suburbia, USA?

Damn, Sassy. No one has ever explained it like that. Food panic - yes, that's the best way to describe it! I feel like a light bulb has gone off in my head. Sassy and consistency, Bunny and Macro and alcohol - I've had an informative week!

K to you if I could

(And Nelms, you're truly sneaky...........)

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

That's usually why people's diets fail - they go 1 week and think "I've followed my diet for a whole week, why don't I see results? Oh fuck it. I must have a slow metabolism or my thyroid is fucked up so I'll never lose the weight." Takes time. Your body will always rebound from any short term change - e.g. you eat a pile of shit and then look fat & bloaty the next day --- its going to take a few days for your body to clear that out. But if you keep doing that -- binge, purge, binge, purge -- even not on an extreme level it will bog down your progress. Further sometimes if you clean up your diet, you will see the immediate effect of water weight drop (probably due to a healthieir level of carb intake) but your body has to go thru a longer process of slowly detoxing out all the shit that was packed in there prior to the change in diet. There are so many processes that have to be allowed to run as they do naturally that you can't just say the changes are occurring at the macro level (e.g. I still look fat so the diet must not be working.)

My competition dates:

Absolutely outstanding post. Karma hath been lobbed into your general vicinity. :)

I'll be your dieting buddy, but the training buddy will be a little hard. Your diet looks really similar to mine on my 1800 days, I am supposed to be eating 1200 on my days off!

Oh I love me a good Sassy log. I am glad you are going back to BB IMO your one competitor that makes BB look feminine as well as attractive wish there were more ladies like you in the sport that could pull off that sexy style.

I guess if the cal difference is primarily from pre / post workout meals then you should be ok....

I don't know :) I have to eat 6 meals (carb, protein) and then a shake with fruit juice before I go to bed on the days I workout and 5 meals (carb/protein) with no shake before I go to bed on the days I don't. Having problems with the ratio she gave me 45carb/35protein/20 fat with 40g of fat on workout days and 28g fat on non-workout. I seem to eat more protein. But she told me not to count calories or plug in numbers, just go by the measurements she wrote down, but everytime I plug them into fitday(yeah I am not listening to her) it doesn't come out to what she says????

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

Sounds like she's giving the ratio as guideance but if the specific meal plan doesn't match that, she is saying not to sweat it right now - that is if you've already pointed that out. Just a note about working w/ trainers - they give you info, and esp if you are relying on them heavily, clients will tend to hold on to every freekin' detail the trainer gives them. Then if somethign doesn't add up the cliient is left freaking out because it doesn't make sense. I'm all about if you hire a trainer, make sure that trainer is handled as an employee and not the person who leaves you in a mess -- if soemthign doesn't make sense, make them explain it. Even if you have to act dumb to get them to really answer the question. But mostly because the trainer doen't have lots of time already working w/ u, he/she can't guarantee that they know exactly what works for you - its up to u & them to work together to monitor what works, what doesn't, tweak to keep things moving all the time.

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

sounds good, I was going to talk to her tonight about the the ratio thing. I do only have 3 weeks left till I start bulking so I know it is going to change again. But your right, I am trying to do this sooo right I might be looking into things to much to be perfect.

Thanks! :)

I totally understand where you are coming from - but another comment to try to keep things in perspective - every first-timer going into competitoin wants to "get it perfect" and "will do anything to get there". But again - you are new to understanding your own body and its reponse to diet & training, as is your trainer. You and the trainer will generally start w/ the approach that has proven itself on a macro level, and then tweak it along the way to match your particular body, timeframe, lifestyle (the stresses of daily life that all of this has to fit into so you dont' do things like lose your job or lose your mind or your family loses their mind), and your target goals. It can add a lot of additional stress wondering if you did something right or wrong, or try somethign & it didn't work or will you die and lose the show if you didnt' do that extra 10 min of cardio.

Sorry I'm rambling - but my point is that there are several levels of training goinig on -- the week to week stuff, the whole 16 week program, the competition prep cycle that you may need several repeats of to further tweak your body (e.g. to build up a lagging body part, further optimize the final week's approach to match how your body responds, etc.) I sort of frame that as "there's always another show" -- not to minimize the importance of your target show(s) but to keep the whole thing in perspective because sometiems you can't expect to come out like Monica Brandt after one round of 16 week prep, regardless of how hard you worked, how many sacrifices you made, etc. It is a constant evolution that can span years. E.g. me - 1981-1995 - trained because I love it. 1995-1999 - learned how to fit diet in better to get results, 2000-present - completed 3 shows, 2 w/ good results, 1 so fucked up I essentially had a physical & emotional shut down for about 6 months, leaving on-going tendonitis problems that I still deal w/, and always learning new stuff.

Anyway - sometimes even locking your trainer in a room & poundign them w/ questions until you understand everything of the entire program doesn't mean thigns will turn out that way, so its good to focus on the immediate goals & progress, but keep that in the longer term context and worry about things as they appropriate in the longer term so you don't kill yourself on the one (very small in the bigger scheme of life) little show effort. :)

Re: Sassy: July 2006 - 41 & BB Bound

your not rambling! This is your thread, and I love reading it for all the information, what you said was all true. :)

I was and am still going hard but realize that life doesn't always go your way, especially with 4 kids and lifes hardballs. But trying to stay focused and I know from a lot of reading these logs, as much as I want it, things happen. But November still is my date and is a long time away! Regardless what I place, I just want to (am going to) finish what I started!

No, they don't call it the kill shelter - I did, because it is. It's called Animal Care and Control - pretty much the same thing, right?

...and yes, I understand about the "reliable male" thing! lol I adopted one of my dogs from this same shelter 4 years ago, and was a sponsor for their 2005 Walk-for-Animals. I'm all about animals!
