Sanitary Injection Thread

After seeing a couple of nasty posts about abcesses and having "surgery on my butt" and such, I thought it may be a good idea to have a sterile injection technique thread for people who don't know some of the practices. This is probably for newbies, but, my guess is that there area lot of vets out there who opt to take the time-saving route rather than the sanitary one. remember, this is your ass... or biceps, or delts. Here's what I like to do, 1-wipe the injection spot w/ a cotton pad that I dabbed alcohol on, 2- run needle and syringe under hot water for ease of injection pain, 3-inject/aspirate, 4-same as step one w/ a new pad, 5- usually take a shower. This may be a little more time consuming but definitely worth it. Any more tips for those likely to have ass surgery in the future?

By the way, i don't mean to say that the examples I used necessarily didn't use sanitary procedures, but, there are hundreds more examples just from here on elite and I'd be willing to bet that at least some of them could have been prevented. Also... NEVER use the same needle twice.

I prefer taking the shower first particularly if I'm doing glute injects.

Well for me it's hard to be sure I'm injecting in the exact place I wiped with alcohol, this is only with glutes of course. With all the twisting and contorting and looking at a mirror I'm never absolutely certain. Considering this can be a particularly dirty area I like to shower first just to be safe.

I'm not sure running hot water over the needle first is a good idea. I could be wrong, but as soon as that needle is exposed, the only thing it's going to touch is my alcohol swabbed ass. I think you meant to say you run the barrel of the syringe under the warm water?

I actually run the barrel of the sryinge and the needle under hot water. I haven't had any injection problems, ever. It makes the needle go in more smooth, and the actual injection less painful.

I find where I want to jab then mark up the area with a pen.
(Two inches either side of the point of entry, that way I can clean the area and jab the same spot)
