Salary question bors

resonator

New member
I currently work a 6 month to permanent job making 57k a year. The time is coming to go permanent and I want to submit a salary requirement to beat what they are paying me plus the cut that the temp firm is getting. Anyone have an idea what temp agencies charge employers? Would 65k be about right? Higher? Lower? I was thinking of giving them a range of 60-70 but I don't want to undercut myself. My job performance is great according to my supervisors. This is in the 3d/Flash/Graphic design field too by the way. Thanks for any replies bors.

what's up bro, I've worked in staffing, and I just hired a temp to help out on a project.

What field are you in? More specialized fields have a higher markup because they are harder to find people for.

The markup can be anywhere from 10% for low skileld workers with a long term contract with the agency.. up to 30-35% for hard to find professional level positions, especially highly technical ones or executive level.

Keep in mind though, your employer pays the agency a markup, but they do not pay your social security taxes, insurance, etc.

When we roll over temps, the high end ones actually get a pay CUT. I just hired a guy for 80hr.. we are paying the agency 93/hr if we roll this guy over his hourly rate will go down to 45/hr.. but he will instead get stock options, insurance, etc.

For other temp positions, we roll them over at the same salary... the philosophy here is that the benefits and what not constitute a fairly big raise for the person getting rolled over.

Tell me what you do specifically and in what city and I will try to help you out with an estimate for what you should ask for. I worked in staffing for a number of years before moving to IT.

Lestat, thanks for the response bro. I am in Orlando and work as a 3d modeler/Flash animator. I pay around $100 a week for insurance that includes myself, wife and baby. Hourly rate is 28. I think my hourly was adjusted slightly higher to account for the cost of benefits.

Edit: By the way, what is the likelihood of the employer buying out the temp contract to put me full time sooner? Does that happen often? How does that work?

Thanks

I´m a student. My parents pay my tuition and my frat pays my rent.

for food, trips, clothing, parties etc I have about 1300 euros =~1600 dollars a month.

If I include treats from granddad and a few work days I have about 20 k dollars a year, without rent and without tuition.

I save some of it. I Buy all my food at what´s comparable to Wal-Mart.

I have a serious wardrobe. but it´s mostly relatively cheap. I have three suits, about 50 ties, a zillion cufflinks, white tie, black tie, 3-4 leather coats. none of it is tailored though, its mostly warehouse stuff and I typically buy the cheapest thing available in my size. It´s "complete" though I´m fit for any occasion

I sometimes wonder where my money goes. a lot of it disappears when I lose stuff. this year ive lost 2 pairs of leather gloves, an umbrella, twice a wallet, and two mobile phones... I´ve had a few high phone bills and dropped a PC I had to replace...

I also have 125 dollar nights out drinking sometimes. that´s when I DON´T bring a girl and don´t let people drink on me.

I should save more. Last heard I had 4400 euros saved at the end of the year. I spent it on electronics and a 5 star vacation to the caribbean. the vacation was overpriced in retrospect. I need to start saving

how many years of experience do you have?

I gave up a job at Lockheed to work here, was there for three years. Database Engineer was my title. But using the programs I use now, only frelance experience. I have already displayed my proficiency to the employer and am at the level (or just below) their senior designer.

In orlando I'd staff a senior level person with your skills and expereince right around 55K. After you have been in the position for 3-5 years I'd say your market value goes up to 60-65K.

This is just estimates from what I have seen out there.

last temp i hired (office manager) she got 17/hr... we paid 23/hr. There was also an agreement that we had to sign saying that if we employed her directly before the end of the contract, we had to pay the temp agency 20% of her first year salary. Needless to say, we don't deal with them anymore.

Translation: I'm spoiled and don't care about saving money because it's given to me

there are more than you know... I had a business plan all drawn up for a new one and was essentially smothered by the bank with criticism... I had a good edge but they still didn't bite... namely due to the fact that (you won't be able to touch the big boys out there... namely b/c stealing b2b clients is a big headache when your only gain is filling
a temp position)

yeah there are are a ton of staffing agencies... i can name a bunch off the top of my head..

manpower, olsten, remedy, tristaff, rapidigm.

You will never get what the temp agency is charging for your services and typically you will experience a 20-30% decrease in your real salary if you do direct. This of course depends on the job and experience level.

Ask them for 60K a year (don't be greedy)

I AM spoiled.

Then again

I dont drive
I walk when possible and otherwise travel lowest class
I buy milk and drinking water in bulk in the discount shop
I bought only one pair of shoes this year
I currently have about 3250 euro´s, 4000 american or so. I don´t see me spending it soon.. I want to have 10 k saved end of this year.

I´ve pondered if maybe I should invest it even. not for the profit, but just to get some experience in the matter. maybe it will work out. A friend of mine was forced by his father to invest for profit with symbolically small sums of money from age 12. it helped him tremendously and I think that´s also part of Warren buffet´s success.

Then the markup should go down. I'Ve seen markups of 30-35% only in very rare cases (highly executives). On the other hand, offer is higher than demand right now so I guess down south, they dont have to deal with these issues.

we have an exclusive contract with one agency and if we find the person and payroll them through the temp agency we pay like 8% (barely covers the taxes and admin for the temp agency) and if the temp agency finds them they get like 15%.. which is bare bones but they make up for the low profit margin with volume.

for high end professional positions, the markup is much higher.. its tough to find people with the exact experience we are looking for in many cases, so you pay a premium for it.

temp agency for higher paying jobs get at least 10%, sometimes more depending on how long you stay.

Are you a 1099 now? If you are, don't forget that there will be a cost of health benefits if you go perm.

Just a thought
