Very sad!! :( My cousin is supposed to go to Iraq in a few months and it scares me. It is so heartbreaking :( I especially hate to see the pics of guy's little kids crying for them. Sorry for your loss.

i don't know...it doesn't really have that profound affect on me.

certainly sad, but every single family of a soldier who's passed in any country goes through that as well.

do you know this guy in RL?

My bad.

Your post makes sense to me now.

Very, VERY sad... but it is a fact of life.

Sorry for the family's loss, but it is no less tragic then the loss that so many other families suffered since there have been people who just could not get along. :(

The Wall
by Paul I. Alfaro

I was asleep so many years,
Trying to forget the past.
The dreams I had so long ago
Are now hidden in a misty cloud.
But sometimes a gentle wind or
A song will bring back a tear
Or two and I remember
And I hear her call.

The wall, it reaches for me.
As I feel her grip
She embraces me with loneliness
And fills my heart with sorrow.
For I see my friends
And the names of men
That shall be forever still;
Their voices no longer heard
Except as a distant cry
From the hollows deep within
The evil soul of that
Black marbled granite wall.

Fear and death were my companions
When I was young
(And thought I was a man)
But I escaped them so long ago
When I came home, from that
Far and distant land.
But the wall calls to me
And I cry now, as I could not then
For I love her, God help me.
But that marbled wall brought
My friends back again.

Yes, a fitting tribute to those that died;
Simply names, row by row
With no reason why.
Just a black marbled granite wall,
That reaches out and makes you cry.

:santa:

So are you saying that he shouldn't have to be fighting for the US cause he doesn't have American blood but was born in the US? Then why did he join the military?

its sad that our country supports efforts that yield such results.

last week an Italian lady came in to get two cemetery spaces
her husband is buried in a national cemetery (Fort Mitchell)
she's going to have him disintered and buried in our cemetery (the gov't will pay the freight)
I chatted with her much as we picked out the spaces
you know I know my war history and I love being knowledgeable about what their husband did
he was in the 36th infantry division
landed at Salerno
he was a good swimmer and apparently cut loose a few of his drowning buddies from their eqp.
the craft landed in deep water
anyhow later in the Italian campaign he got shot in the leg
as he was laying there the germans came by and bayoneted him (typical to make sure guys are dead in combat)
he must of still managed to play dead (you do what you have to do to survive) well enough even after that gut stab because he survived
his wife was first generation Italian immigrants (we chatted about Ellis Island)
and he's in Italy fighting

he's got one of those veteran white cross monuments
I told her to bring it with him and we'll set it up in our cemetery
that would be cool

SAN PIETRO INFINE, Italy – The highly revered 36th Infantry Division (ID) was the first American combat division to land on the continent of Europe. History has shown that the brave men filling its ranks made an impression on those they encountered during battle. Their unwavering dedication to free those oppressed by the Nazi Germans also impressed the world.

Located half way between Naples and Rome is one of the bloodiest battlefields from the Italian campaign of World War II. It was here in the Liri Valley that Allied Forces slowly battled their way to victory through San Pietro and Monte Cassino during late 1943 and early 1944, eventually liberating Rome from German forces.

The Battle of San Pietro

On Sept. 8, 1943, Italy surrendered to the Allied Forces. This surprise development made the Germans look on their former allies as one of their new enemies. As a result, Italy soon felt the full force of the German blitzkrieg. The Nazis ravaged the port of Naples, then moved toward the mountains on their way to their next target – the city of Rome.

German forces dug in for the winter along the San Pietro Infine and Monte Cassino area in order to block passage through the Liri Valley. They had the mountainous terrain to their advantage as Allied Forces fought treacherous winter conditions as well as intense German firepower.

While the Americans fought their way to the fortified mountainous defensive line, the Germans were enslaving and murdering the citizens of San Pietro, which the Nazis had occupied during September.

American troops first entered the hillside town San Pietro Infine Dec. 16-17, 1943.

The passageway through the Liri Valley leading to San Pietro was appropriately nicknamed “Death Valley.” Together, the Fifth Army and its many subordinate units sustained 16,000 casualties during the costly advance to free the Italians from the death grip of the Nazis.

The original town of San Pietro Infine was completely destroyed. What little remains now is a reminder of the ravages of war.

Remembering liberation

San Pietro Mayor Fabio V’ecchiarino said his town’s residents have honored the brave Allied Forces, and in particular the Soldiers of the 36th ID, annually since December 2002.

This year, local residents, Italian and U. S. military representatives, including guest Maj. Gen. Jose S. Mayorga, commanding general of the Texas-based 36th ID, braved skin-chilling cold winds for the special remembrance ceremony. Italian and U.S Army color guard members placed wreaths at monuments recognizing the men of the 1st Italian Motor Group and the 36th ID.

“As we lay the wreaths in honor of all Italian and U.S. Soldiers, let us not forget the sacrifices they made,” General Mayorga said during his speech. “They were part of the greatest generation of our time. The survivors and their descendants want to ensure that the future generations of San Pietro remember their history. We are humbled by their desire to preserve the memory of the 36th ID at the Battle of San Pietro.”

General Mayorga said the revered “T-Patch” division suffered one of the top 10 highest casualty rates of all U.S. Army divisions during World War II. Estimates indicate approximately 1,400 36th ID troops lost their lives in one week while fighting the Germans.

Mayor V’ecchiarino said roughly 100 people who personally experienced the Battle of San Pietro during 1943 still live in the hillside town. One such resident is Antonio Adolfo Zambardi, who owns a local coffee shop. He was only 11 years old when the German forces invaded his village, but as expected, he remembers it very well.

“Many people ran away into the trees to get away from the bombs,” Mr. Zambardi said through an interpreter. “I hid in the caves with many others. The bombardment lasted 18 days until the Allied Forces ran them out.”

The mayor said the frightened residents were finally able to enjoy a better life after three months of suffering at the hands of the Germans. The approximate 1,800 inhabitants of San Pietro were vastly outnumbered by thousands of Nazi soldiers.

It was on a cool September morning in 1943, that the Allies had begun the riskiest amphibious operation of the entire Second World War. The landing craft approached a little known sea town south of Naples called Salerno. Before the assault craft were even in shallow water, German firepower began to rain in heavily. The landings came as no surprise to the German Wehrmacht and Field Marshal Kesselring. Salerno was one of few possible landing sites, and purposely the 26th Panzer Division was deployed right in the vicinity to defend the Salerno coast.

German defensive fire was particularly effective with 88mm, quad 20mm, and 50, and 75mm antitank gun fire. In the American half of the landings, the target was a flat area at the ancient Greco-Roman ruins of Paestum. This assault force consisted of the green, but well trained 36th Texas National Guard Infantry Division. The initial assault waves met heavy fire. So heavy, some landing craft had to abandon their coordinated landing spots for safer approaches to land their infantry. Axis air power had made its most spectacular appearance since North Africa, and in their strafing had claimed heavy damage or sinking of at least 3 Allied ships. 18 P-38 Lightning fighters alone were downed by Axis fighters at Salerno.

The 36th Infantry bled heavy from fighting an enemy who possessed a plethora of support weapons, and machine guns firing at a rate of over 1,000 rounds a minute from dominating elevated terrain. Reguardless, the 36th Infantry Div. managed to clear some enmy positions to create a small enclave for follow on forces. A toehold had been secured in Italy, but a shaky one. The problem would come later in the next days in the form of Panzer IV counterattacks. The Panzers wreaked havoc among the 36th, taking a serious toll in American lives. The U.S. Army Bazookas could not penetrate the Panzers' 80mm frontal armor. And the infantry were paying for it dearly.

Where were the fighters? Allied air power was indecisive because it was at the edge of its range. they were being flown from air bases in Sicily. They only had some 30 minutes fly time over the beachead.

The Wehrmacht Counterblow - Salerno, 1943

The American forces were able to establish a foothold in the first couple of days. Though day one's objectives were far from reached, American infantry continued to fight inland. Casualties were mounting, particularly from German artillery and mortars posessing perfect observation. Supplies and artillery were able to get ashore and were deploying, along with the reinforcing 45th Infantry Division. The beachead was expanded, the 36th Division on the right, and the 45th on the left. It seemed they would achieve their mission and advance into the mountains surrounding the flat landing areas, but the enemy had other ideas.

The Germans had amassed the 3rd, 26th, and 15th Panzergrenadier Divisions, Herman Georing, 16th Panzer Divisions, and the 76th Corps coming from of Calabria in the south. On September 13, the American sector was hit by a concentrated combined arms assault focused on the town of Altavilla, and its prevalent Hill 424 defended by the 36th Inf. Div.. Despite a brave attempt to endure enemy fire, accurate German artillery pounded and disorganized the defending infantry. The Germans attacked with tanks and panzergrenadiers, and after a sharp and bloody fight, the Americans were routed, fleeing for their lives. The retreating groups of men were rallied at the rear and dug in. Naval 6 inch (152mm) gunfire from the U.S. Navy cruisers Savannah, Philadelphia and Boise rained in and stopped the murderous Panzer advance. Throughout the beachead the British and American troops were assailed by an absolutely potent enemy who posessed the most advantageous terrain and obsevation possible seeing every move. They used these advantages to maximize the effectiveness of the long 75mm, 88mm, 10.5cm and 15.0cm guns with the accuracy of giant sniper weapons. A town in the northern British sector called Battipaglia was the scene of just this, and what may have been the battles's most intense street fighting. Here both sides used their mass artillery to devastating effect. The town changed hands several times a day, with great loss of life, and finally becoming a German posession.

On September 15th, the most intense Panzer attack came in the center of the beachead parallel to the Sele River. Here the American VI Corps in the south, and the British X Corps to the north were poorly joined. Due to the attrition of the battle, neither Allies could afford to stretch their battalions for the security of this critical seam. The commanding German General, Vietinghoff, saw this weak point and concentrated his panzers and infantry right into the vulnerable opening. The sector was defended by the veteran 45th Infantry Division. The Division had a regiment defending the town of Persano, which was about to be in the path of the most powerful Wehrmacht assault of the entire battle. For the American Infantry battalions at Persano, it was a virtual slaughter.

When your country starts getting bombed, embassies blown up, ships bombed, and the heart of Sydney hit with planes you can start to understand how Americans feel about the bastards behind this. Bush was in office when it came to a boil and congress approved the military action. Who was Prez at the time would not have mattered. If other countries would quit sitting on their thumbs, and be a little proactive the terrorists would not have gotten so well embedded.

If you for one second believe they will go away if you ignore them then you have learned nothing. Clinton tried that, it resulted in the attacks on the World Trade Center. This was preceded by attacks on many occasions including a failed one on the WTC. It'll be coming to a city near you soon if you do nothing to stop them.

War yes. Soldiers no.

You don't have to support the war to support the soldiers.

And most of my anger is towards stupid fat walmart retards who voted for Bush and the war in 2004, and are now turning a 180.

And this issue is bigger then 'what razorguns thinks' - even tho I still believe the world shoudl always listen to what I say. I am awesome.

you pity me because I'm a decent guy, married to a beautiful woman madly in love with me, living an awesome life, have everything I could ever want, make a shitload of money, and have faith in God and follow my religion. Yet you pity me.

I dunno about what his MOS is , but infantry/combat engineering , there's nothing secret about what they do. Yes it is to kill people and blow shit up. No security clearance and just about any ASVAB would be eligable

The Secret Service, while they're part of the Department of Treasury, are entrusted with the security of The President.
