I had an ex-employee call me yesterday and ask me for a job. Since hard working employees who do it the way you want are hard to come by, I told him I might find something for him to do. I fired him right before Christmas last year because of his failure to come to work after payday. Anyway, I found some things for him to do and I was talking to him about where he had been and what he had been doing.
He told me that he had been in and out of jail for non-support (child). I asked him how long he would have to stay when they locked him up and he said 45 days.
What is the purpose of locking somebody up who obviously is hard working but has a hard time personally making ends meet because of child support? When he does get locked up, he loses his job. When he worked for me, he always paid it and therefore stayed out of jail.
Why can't they garnish his wages and avoid jail time and the paper work?
It seems unproductive to lock somebody up these days because of the slow job market. He is hard working and like I said, he always did things right but just had a hard time remembering to come to work after he got paid. I warned him on numerous ocassions and wrote him up several times but he still did not respond the way he should have.
I don't know the laws when it comes to child support or the legal thinking surrounding locking somebody up. Grant it, I know these things are wrong but I just don't understand the law in the above circumstances.
