Rugby Workout Suggestions?

The guy down the hall wants me to play rugby next semester. I told him I would at least come to a practice or two and see if its for me. If I am going, I am not going to make it easy to kick my ass. I currently workout four days a week, but is there something specific I should do for Rugby?

The rugby players I know just do compound lifts 3x/week. Full body each time:

Squats
Bench
Military Press

depends what position you will play, for backs id say train like a sprinter, how that is I dunno but im sure there are some programs out there you can dig up

if your a forward is do the 3xweek full body, with lots of running, intervals etc,you will need it because this aint no pussy sport like football, its constant running

I'd do a lot of conditioning work man. I suck at running and a lot of people try and get me to play rugby, but I know I'd be absolutely dying out on the field out of breathe.

Compound movements will probably be your best bet, strengthen everything you can because they get some brutal injuries. My friend just broke his leg playing rugby.

Most rugby players I know have tree trunks for legs. Start squatting and lunging if you haven't already

one more thing I want to mention,if your a forward really concentrate on core strength, last season some guy on the other team broke his back when the scrum collapsed on him,it was gross because I hear it pop.

yo where are you at? I'm currently playing rugby for Vanderbilt, Mid-South Conference so we might play yall if you're anywhere near us...anyways, like some guys have already mentioned, it's a sport heavily reliant on explosiveness and conditioning. Dont think walking out on the field with a 315 pd. bench press will do you any good. You will still get the shit knocked out of you (ie myself..haha). I'm 5'9" and 195 and I play wing (smallest position on the team - a back slot). Depending on how big you are, I suggest you focus your lifts on squats, back (power cleans and deads) and believe it or not, really work on your shoulders (push press, militaries etc.). In all honesty, training for rugby is not bodybuilding or powerlifting. The best players out there have 27" legs, thick backs and well rounded shoulders for all the non-padded tackling. It is not the barrel chested guys who can't run or move worth shit. So to sum it all up, legs, legs, legs (this will help you whether you're a back or forward), back, and shoulders. I'm not saying dont work your chest out, just remember that playing rugby well is not guaged by 'how much you bench press and how big your arms are.' Sorry for the long post, just excited to see another rugby player on this forum. Feel free to PM me.

peace,
CN
