Ok, so I'm in the mood for a good RPG. I haven't been a diehard rpg guy. In fact, i've rarely played too many. If any of you have played some of the old sega genesis rpg's like Phantasy Star, or any Zelda game. I've never played any of the new final fantasy's. I've played the first few originals back on nes and snes though. A medieval setting is always cool. Anyways, what can you recommend. Not necessarily a new rpg, but any rpg for ps1 or 2, pc, or even n64.

if you liked the first final fantasy (on NES) check out "final fantasy origins"..it is a remake of FF1 for ps1(came in last week), and final fantasy II, graphics arent that good(Except the cut scenes which are totally remade with great 3d graphics) but hey the idea is to remake the first final fantasy. so if you liked the old version you will love this one. really cool game.

I would seriously suggest you get final fantasy X and VII...awesome games.

For a change, in the n64, you MUST get Zelda Ocarina of time, IMO it is the best zelda ever released. If you like it, also get Majora's mask. Which is an awesome addition. I guarantee you will get hooked.

RPG-7V Antitank Grenade Launcher

The RPG-7V is a recoilless, shoulder-fired, muzzle-loaded, reloadable, antitank grenade launcher. It fires an 85-mm (PG-7) or 70-mm (PG-7M) rocket-assisted HEAT grenade from a 40-mm smoothbore launcher tube. The launcher has two hand grips; a large optical sight; a thick, wooden heat guard around the middle; and a large, flared blast shield at the rear of the tube. The RPG-7V is light enough to be carried and fired by one person. However, an assistant grenadier normally deploys to the left of the gunner to protect him with small arms fire. The grenadier normally carries two rounds of ammunition, and the assistant grenadier carries three rounds. The internal rocket motor of the PG-7/7M grenade ignites after traveling approximately 11 meters; this gives the projectile higher velocity (sustained out to 500 meters), flatter trajectory, and better accuracy. Further enhancing accuracy are four large, knife-like fins at the rear of the projectile which unfold when the round leaves the tube, and smaller, offset fins at the very rear which produce a slow rotation. The maximum effective range is 500 meters for stationary targets and 300 meters for moving targets. Maximum range is 920 meters, at which point the projectile self-destructs approximately 4.5 seconds after launching. The PG-7/-7M grenade, with a shaped-charge warhead, has armor penetration of 330 millimeters. The current RPG-7V model can mount a telescope and both infrared and passive night sights. All RPG-7 models have optical sights which can be illuminated for night sighting. They have open sights for emergency use.

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned the Breath of Fire series - which is about as oldschool as you can get - or Star Ocean 2 or Legend of Mana. Ditto on the SaGa Frontier recommendation, though some people are put off by the sheer non-linearity of it.

Adding to the SNES emulation list, you should download Soulblazer, Final Fantasy V, Secret of Mana, or the translated Seiken Densetsu 3 (aka Secret of Mana 2). I think I must have played Seiken Densetsu 3 with every conceiveable party combination in the few years since the translation patch has been out. :)

Me and my friend have been playing Breath of Fire 4 on the PC (some hacker group took the PS game and modified it apparently to play on the PC)

Pretty cool game, just like the other breath of fire games.

There's also a highly acclaimed game that you can play on a SNES emulator called Bahamut Lagoon. it's a Japanese RPG that never made an official release in the states but a group called De-jap has translated the game. You can find the english translation patch and the game online somewhere.

Then theres Tales of Phantasia for the SNES emulator as well.

Final fantasy 8 is one of the best ive played, i loved 10, but it was kinda linear, not a lot of freedom like in the past. i also got a kick out of dragon warrior 4 for the original nintendo....

aha i guess i didnt read your whole post, what the hell is legend of mana? if thats a sequel to SOM then i gotta get it..

There's 4 games in the Seiken Densetsu series, known in the US as Secret of Mana. The first was Final Fantasy Adventure for the original Gameboy, the second was Secret of Mana for the SNES, third was Seiken Densetsu 3 for the SNES (which was never released outside of Japan, but a couple of years ago, some Mana fans independently translated the ROM and released a patch), and Legend of Mana for the PSX is the fourth and final installment.

If you're looking for a game exactly like Secret of Mana, Legend of Mana is not it. The only things they have in common are similar world elements (the Mana Tree, Mana Goddess, elemental spirits, etc) and the battle system - the story is totally unrelated. It's a worthy game, just not much like its predecessors. Seiken Densetsu 3 on the other hand is like Secret of Mana with better graphics, more playable characters, and just all around hot fudge sundae action RPG goodness. It's as close to a sequel as it could get. PM me if you want the translated ROM. :)

you play RPG's and you're a girl? guys must be falling all over you.

nothing is sexier than a girl that owns a ps2 and can actually play a game or two on it.

MassiveGunz sent me a fax asking me to tell you guys that he was tricked into clicking on this thread b/c he thought it was about rocket-propelled grenades, which he informed me are very similar to the siens bombs he dropped on several clients last week.

BOF 2 along with FF3 on thesnes are my two favorite old schools. THe chrono games rock, all FF's are sweet nd cheep, 8 is my fvorite but also make sure to look into FF tactics! I just picked up Final Fantasy ANthology a week ago which is a remake of 1 and 2 for the plystation, its cool.. The Suikoden Series kicks some major ass, there are a bunch others I have pr played through 70

yep seiken densetsu 3 is great. final fantasy tactics and tactics ogre for PSX are great games as well, they are not traditional RPGs (they're turn-based strategy RPGs) but a lot of fun.
but the best ones (IMO) are on SNES;
-the final fantasies, IV in particular
- as someone else mentioned; the breath of fire series
- the 7th saga
- there's tons more, you might wanna check out gamefaqs.com for more suggestions
