Romanian Deads

Quick question, just did them tonight, felt during and after, a lot of tension and strain in my mid-lower back. It wasn't on the spine though, to the sides of it. I'm guessing that's just the stabilizer muscles working, and they have to be strengthened. Yes, no?

Am I suposed to feel this?
Lower back gets tense like deads get them.
Didn't feel much in the hams...

proabbly your spinal erectors working hard. maybe your back wasn't straight? arching too much?

I feel nothing in my back when I do em, some tension in lower back, but I soon forget about. I just feel an overall nice effort.
But I have been doing pulls for a while so maybe don't notice it anymore due the general strengthening of the muscles. I don't try to deliberately flex or tense any muscle, I just hold eveyrthing nice and comfy

if you are pushing your hips back your hams will be active, but you don't get the "tear of the bone" feel to the hammies unless you really push the hips as far back as you can and keep the back straight, with shins vertical.
Don't go too heavy on these, it's not an exercise where you pile on the weight

Anyway if the hips are back the hams are working, even it may not feel like. The lower back is working off course, because your bent over. if you can't get the hams to fire even with just the bar, then your form needs work

If you didn't feel it much in the hams, then you weren't doing them right. Stand about a foot in front of a wall with your back facing it. Try to stick you ass out so it hits the wall. Go further and further out, sticking your butt out and keeping your back flat and shins pretty straight. There should be a stretch that you really feel. That's what you want with the bar.

Okay, I was using quite an arch, CCJ. I was afraid of rouding, so instead I had my lower back kind of "dipping inwards". It wasn't straight. Curved, but opposite of rounded. Yeah, you know what I mean.

How do you know you're arching too much ?
