"Roids made me attack the cop"

Football player sentenced for beating
Steroids played role in attack on officer

Friday, November 09, 2001

By Tom Gibb, Post-Gazette Staff Writer

INDIANA, Pa. -- Willie Knapp, once one of Allegheny County's most promising high school football prospects, is going into the state prison system for tackling and choking a police officer last year in what Knapp's lawyer said was a steroid-fueled rage.

Indiana County Common Pleas Judge Gregory Olson yesterday sentenced Knapp, 23, to two to four years in prison but allowed 14 months' credit for the time Knapp spent awaiting trial, under house arrest at his family's Franklin Park home.

Knapp, though, could be paroled to a halfway house in about eight months if the state Corrections Department honors a request from Knapp's lawyer and steers the former football star away from a state prison and into the commonwealth's Quehanna Boot Camp. Quehanna is a remote Clearfield County center where corrections officers take the role of drill sergeants and dish out a six-month helping of boot camp conditions to prisoners.

"We think there'd be benefit," defense lawyer Thomas Ceraso of Greensburg said after Knapp -- about 6 feet 2 inches tall and 300-plus pounds, looking very much the lineman he was -- was led away in shackles.

Olson could have let Knapp off with probation. But he said he came down heavily because Knapp had a history of violence, a juvenile record and a drug problem -- the latter, Ceraso said, a reference to the bodybuilding steroids police found in his car when he was arrested after the midday attack 13 months ago on the Indiana University of Pennsylvania campus.

What's more, Olson said, Knapp "has shown no remorse."

"There's no indication that Willie has used drugs other than steroids," Ceraso said outside the courtroom. "But he's a much different person now. He's a good person who doesn't have the rage he had."

It was a subdued Knapp who went before Olson yesterday, dressed in a sport coat, open collar shirt, oversized slacks and running shoes. Outside the courtroom, he politely brushed off questions.

Knapp was an explosive lineman at North Allegheny High School, where he graduated in 1997 before going on to play two years at the University of Rhode Island.

What followed, though, were aborted bids to break onto the football rosters of the University of Pittsburgh and IUP -- and then, an explosion of rage.

On Sept. 10, 2000, he was charged with flattening an IUP student with a punch to the head during a fraternity party at which one witness told police he watched Knapp "throw people off the back porch."

For that, Knapp got two years' probation.

But two days after the attack, IUP police say, Knapp became enraged when he was stopped for making an improper turn.

Police said Knapp threatened IUP Sgt. Gregory Davis, charged him and then -- when Davis sprayed Knapp with Mace -- knocked him down and tried to choke him.

Knapp avoided trial by pleading guilty to aggravated assault under a deal in which he avoided other charges, including attempted homicide and possessing restricted steroids.

I would like to see him get "steriod induced rage" with a certain Tx police officer.....ummmmm.....who could that be??????? Yeah bitch buck up to the law ( Ronnie Coleman) DON"T MESS WITH Texas, Two reasons 1-George Bush 2- Ronnie Coleman

This is the type of person that gives AS a bad name. This fuckface had a history of violence and dumbfuck choices. Yeah it might of made him a little edgey, but he is is still a DUMBSHIT. A big one.....literally

This is what starts the whole AS causes rage bull shit , the ass was probably drunk. The cop should have sprayed his ass then beat the shit out of him.

And size doesen't matter in prison , I had a friend that was 6'4"
and around 300-320lbs at about12-15%, and a known martial arts instructor.

I asked him about the time he spent in a state prison for a felony
drug charge he said the first time they tried to rape him he put 2 of them in the hospital for a couple of weeks and broke the other ones ribs. The next time they tried , he got a concussion , 6 broke ribs a broke nose dislocated shoulder and a sore ass.

I hope this punk gets gang probed , for being stupid !!

If the kid had a record since being a juvie, and several violence charges, then what the hell does steroids have to do with it???

The kid is a fuckin asshole with no self control, what does steroids have to do with it?

This is as stupid as the guy in my club popping dbol's for about eight months now.

No, Willie has always been a huge motherfucker. He's also always been decidedly insane. I've never met a badder man in my life. I think prison is somewhere that he will excel. But, I can picture a 135 pound guy giving him the sharpened toothbrush in the liver or something.

Cops on Fox at 8pm EST saturday. Did you see the promo? Announcer: "he is large, naked, raging and smashing through fences!" cop's voice in background: "he must be on something!!!"

The guy had some size, but he also was a fat shit. Looked more like he was on a KFC cycle.

remember, tomorrow at 8pm we get to see the true nature of them steeeeroid thingies, and how they make you "punch through steel (or in this case wood)" like Brock Strasser.

Sounds like the lawyer is using this in his defense. This is typical, don't blame it on the real reason or except responsibility for your actions. As far as prison gos, they make little ones out of big ones everyday.

willy is one bad mother. He has been strong since he popped out of his momma. I have never met somebody as bad ass as him. Steroids just took the fall in this case because the lawyer needed some way to get leverage. He will be fine in prison, nobody is gonna fuck with that kid.

Him and Tyson both should be in jail for giving gear a bad rap.

If you are a natural idiot. Then on gear you will be a complete fucking idiot.

I saw the commercial for that....that ass hole must have been on pcp or something...but I wouldn't doubt if they blame it on steroids LOL :)

That sucks. You get a handful of steroid cases like this, and everyone goes apeshit.

Good hell.

A football player could die of a gunshot wound to the head, and they'd say steroids played a "prominent role" in his death.

I'm moving to europe, the American media is going to kill me one day the way my blood pressure gets after reading this garbage.

I'm sure he blamed the roids hopeing for a lesser sentence. That bastard.

EXACTLY. "It wasn't me, it was the roids"! ACTUALLY, according to law, if there are "mitigating" circumstances proven in a case(like being abused, a drug addict, or having a mental condition), then it can signifigantly REDUCE a sentence. Thats why the dude did it, and I cant say I blame him(although I dont agree with him). Without the "roids made me do it" defense, then it might have looked like he just did the beating because he felt like it, because he hates cops, or whatever. Those would be considered AGRAVATING circumstances, that can signifigantly ADD to a sentence. When you look at it that way....ANY of us would do the same thing----GUARANTEED!!!
