Embarrassed after a three-some for sure.

We hear youre leaving, thats ok
I thought our little wild time had just begun
I guess you kind of scared yourself, you turn and run
But if you have a change of heart
Chorus:
Rikki dont lose that number
You dont wanna call nobody else
Send it off in a letter to yourself
Rikki dont lose that number
Its the only one you own
You might use it if you feel better
When you get home

never thought up THAT senario.........i've always thought that rikki was a guy and the song was about a gay love affair that one of them was trying to end over the objection of the other guy.

I think the key words here are "We" and "Our"...Nite bro.

awesome arrangement on that song also.....steely dan was "on point" with that confused gender song....

With that spelling it's either a girl or an Indian dude.

Maybe they are trying to bring him over to the other side:

I have a friend in town, hes heard your name
We can go out driving on slow hand row
We could stay inside and play games, I dont know
And you could have a change of heart

Anyway, one of my all time favorite bands and favorite songs. I was a probably about 11 when this song was on the radio so to me it was totally innocent. I thought it was just about one friend wanting to stay in touch with another.

(from Songfacts)
The keyboard riff was taken from "Song For My Father," which was released in 1964 by Jazz composer and pianist Horace Silver. The opening of both songs is nearly identical. It's a good example of how Steely Dan used elements of Jazz in pop songs.

Some comments:
* I believe (number) in the song refers to a 1960s 70s term for a marijuana cigarette. Steeley Dan's use of this metaphor was brilliant. The expression as I remember was "lets do a number" or smoke a joint. When you hear the song the next time you will pick up the double meaning.

* Wow ! Are you guys WAAAAAAAAAAAY off ! The "Rikki" is Rikki Lee Jones ("Chuckie's in Love") who had a torrid affair with Donald Fagen in the late 60's !

I've always hated that song.
Sounds like the record is dragging. Hate that toto song Roseanna and Every Breath You Take by the Police for the same reason.

my fav......
DO IT AGAIN

In the mornin you go gunnin'
For the man who stole your water
And you fire till he is done in
But they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singin'
As they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hangin'
And they put you on the street

[Chorus:]
You go back Jack do it again
Wheel turnin' 'round and 'round
You go back Jack do it again

When you know she's no high climber
Then you find your only friend
In a room with your two timer
And you're sure you're near the end
Then you love a little wild one
And she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she's smilin'
You'll be on your knees tomorrow

[Chorus]

Now you swear and kick and beg us
That you're not a gamblin' man
Then you find you're back in Vegas
With a handle in your hand
Your black cards can make you money
So you hide them when you're able
In the land of milk and honey
You must put them on the table

[Chorus]

Ummm...I take it that you like that horrible abomination of a song? lol. Seriously, that is my number one all time most hated song. Every time I hear a note of it, I want to stick ice picks in my ears just to make that caterwalling end.

"oh no..gaudaaaaaaaaahara won't do

and i'm never going back.........

to my old school".

i've often wondered if peg was "in" this song somewhere?
