...would chugging down some sugary/no fat drink or food prior to eating cause more macronutrients from the meal to be shuttled into the muscle cells ala insulin, but not to that degree???

Not sure what you mean "but not to that degree." Insulin is insulin. Yes, this works in theory. However, macronutrient ratios and form play a big role here. A dietary induce insulin spike can never be used as efficently as it can post-exercise. Thats the whole baisis for recovery shakes.

Meaning you won't get as big of an insulin spike as if you use insulin. Still big enough to spur growth?

I specifically meant prior to a whole-food post training meal...

Yes, still enough to spur growth. People have been growing for years without shooting anything.

Yes it works...if you want to use very high GI foods for a pronounced spike you are better off using a quick absorbing media such as protein powder (read whey) in a liquid.
