It is illegal to transfer copyright material over the internet without expressed permission of the copyright holder. So that makes using any P2P software to get music, movies, software, images illegal if they are copyrighted. Site like Itunes or musicmatch are legal because they have an agreement with the record companies and charge a monthly fee or a per song rate which the record companies get a piece of.
