rest inbetween exercises?

worksux

New member
I'm trying to bulk so I'm wondering how much rest should I have inbetween exercises? Like when I do bench and then move to incline

There is no rule about this.

Bench and incline are similar exercises, so you could either do:
(1) the amount of rest you normally take between bench sets;
(2) a little bit more so you can refocus.

I'd do the latter

Yea I take enough time so I'm recovered and so I can do well on the next exercise. I wanted to make sure that I wasn't over resting. Thanks

Heavier Sets get longer rest (3-5 mins), lighter sets should get less rest (1-3 mins).

Not that you should ever go "light", but I mean if you're doing 10+ reps I would consider that a 1-3 min rest rep range, as opposed to 4-6 being the longer end of the rest range.

whatever time it takes for you to move the weight youve set up to do. if you feel after 1 min your ready to attack it go for it.. if you need 3-5.. go for 3-5 just listen to your body and get the weight moved

I think if you are really training HARD, it naturally takes you a few minutes to recover and mentally prepare yourself to put yourself through it again.

I'd say around 3 minutes as a ballpark figure for most exercises, now if its sqauts then i'm taking longer lol

Old school philosophy was NEVER more than one minute.

I've tried to go up in size on 3-5 minutes rest between sets... and 40 seconds to 1 min between sets.

1 minute and under wins in the real world.

The concept is not to lift the heaviest set you can with the most reps. It is to GROW... and for hitting the muscle and growing short rest times are what best trigger growth.

^^ Really? I'm not arguing bro but I have always beleived that all you are trying to do is simply break down the muscle fibres as much as possible .... and my thought was always to train as heavy as possible to acheive this (obviously keeping good form).

If I were to try another set 1 minute later, I wouldnt have recovered from the last one yet.

Each to his own though I guess. If there were one magic formula, we'd all be doing it lol

They all have it's place. You can cycle rest inbetween sets. 6 weeks 1 min rest 6 weeks 3 or four minutes higher. Let us not forget that by resting more you can increase maximal strength output. And by resting less you can increase the GH levels naturally, through lactic acid build-up.

On my heavy stuff like all compounds i take long breaks so im "fully" recovered between sets so i can go all out.

the compound movements i rest till i hv fully recovered. then as i do more isolation stuff. i shorten the time between.

Ex.
Chest/Tris day: Flat bench, incline dumbell press. as much rest as needed to move the weight. Dips/kickbacks shorter rest intervals.

It makes me feel good to leave the gym with that pumped feeling.

i just started the shorter rest addition. i have also increased my reps but lowered the poundage. Was doing reps of 5 for 4 months. had some great gains. now its time to mix it up a bit.
