Rep Speeeed

My rep speed is slower than just about everybody in the damn gym, which also lowers the weight I can use.

I take 2-3 seconds on the positive, and 3 full seconds on the negative portion of the rep. If you count it out, it is actually a lot longer than it sounds, especially with the weight on top of you.

Most people I observe use about 1 second on the positive, and 0.5 seconds on the negative.

I've always read that to keep the weight under control throughout the whole rep is key, but from what I see around the gym it seems like I'm the only one who read that.

What about you guys? Am I alone here?

depends on what your training for, but you should explode the concentrics as hard and fast as you can without jamming your joints, and control the eccentric if your after size gains, plus strength. For power, fast up and down.
When I say fast I don't mean pushing the bar fast, but really pushing it with the same kind of effort you would do with a one rep max out - maximal explosion! You wanna recruit the fast twitch and high threshold fibers, these grow the most if size is your goal.

weight is irrelevant, bar speed and tension is more important

i just move weight, dont really pay attention to rep speed...if anything, ill slow up on the negative a bit for control
