Red wine suggestions

im getting together with my girlfriend tonight, shes had kind of a rough stressful week so we are just going to sit back with a bottle and relax. but I really dont know much about the type of wines she likes but I do know she likes dry wines, preferably red, so if you guys can reccomend something at a reasonable price id be very appreciative

under 40bucks ,the wines ive bought before taste just the same at 10 bucks as they have at 70,but I like sweet reds

Oak, if you have a good wine, or better yet, a winery nearby go ask for a suggestion. They will often let you taste.

Some reds are full bodied and fruity, others dry. You can get a more dry merlot or cabernet if you ask around. =-)

bout an hour drive to a good one,I really like one of the local wineries but didnt want to just walk into the liquor store and ask a clerk for suggestions as its turned out for a shit in the past

i guess it depends on her taste and how well she knows wine....these days Shiraz is seems to be the typical red wine of choice, or a syrah.

when i drink red, i usually gravitate to a cabernet savignon or cab franc, or a blend of those with pinot noir maybe...they tend to have a more robust taste

there's some good spanish reds out there that i'm not as familiar with...

the best way to learn wine is to just try stuff

i figured it was some ghetto shit when the name was letters and numbers. she would laugh her ass off at me,shes very cultured in wines so this is my half ass attempt to impress her by bringing some nice wine.

Berringer is good. Its only like 10-12 bucks a bottle and chicks never seem to think I'm being a cheapass.

In the liquor superstores they often have wine divided into "flights" with descriptions of many of them. You may want to go look in the dry red flight and read the descriptions and food pairing suggestions. If she really loves wine, she will probably enjoy trying something new.

I tend to life a full bodied, fruity and peppery red, so I'm not much more help, unfortunately.

Spain

Marques de Caceres
or
Sangre de Toro

failing Spain, then Italy

Rosso di Montalcino or if you want to splurge

Brunello di Montalcino

(a good Chianti is always OK, though)

I don't give a damn about french wines

and don't even think about German reds... there is not enough sun here for that

Turley Old Vine Zinfandel, anything by Q'upe, Green and Red Zin, Ridge Zinfandels. I like the bigger, fruiter wines that have something to them. Merlot and Cab are so plain to me anymore, if you get one, shoot for an Aussie cab or a WA state merlot.

Disagree on the Spanish recommends. Condado de Haza is nice, anything from Priorat will be big, dry and full of earthy tones. I'm drawing a blank on another nice temparnillo, shit. Same region though. If you go Rioja, tri Lorinon. good shit

Merlot is a very sweet mild red. You can get a good bottle of Hungarian Merlot for around $10. It is not always the price, like you said, that determines how good a wine is. I have had a $400 bottle of wine that tasted so bad I wouldn't give it to a homeless guy.

Get the "real" wine but trust javaguru on this bor. Purchase the most ghetto ass wine you can find and pretend to serve it as your best choice for a joke. I guarantee you'll win major points. :) That's what I would do.

Cabernet is my favorite type of wine - and for about 15 bucks a bottle - J Lohr - cabernet is really good. One of my all time faves. and it's inexpensive.

I only drink Pinot Noir for health reasons:

it produces more resveratrol than other grapes--up to 40 times as much resveratrol as grapes such as merlot and cabernet sauvignon.

and the most healthiest Pinot Noir:

In a study of hundreds of wines from around the globe, Cornell researcher Leroy Creasy found the highest resveratrol levels in pinot noir grapes grown in cooler, rainy places like the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York and Oregon's Willamette Valley. (In fact, the highest resveratrol content found in a wine was in Vinifera's Fleur de Pinot Noir, with four times as much as the nearest California pinot noir tested
