Depends on how you look at it and how you think people are going to be. Negativity creates negativity. If you expect people to be shitty, you'll probably get what you ask for.

My philosophy is simple. It has helped me tremendously since I adopted it and its simple even though I have much education in human behavior and interaction. Its not about learning when you talk to two assholes in a row, you tend to not treat the next person correctly limiting the opportunity to give them the opportunity to show they are good.

I, in my life, make two assumptions about people.

1) they are essentially good.. and
2) they like to help

If you approach every new person like that then you will be much happier in life. With very little exception that is true.
Now they may have issues or things that get into the way of that. Often it's just they want to be heard, listen for one minute or ten and those barriers go away.

With very little exception I find that using most of the skills I have learned can diffuse people allowing them to function more properly and I have dealt with thousands of assholes that turned out to be cool once you listen to them a bit.

Of course, you can be a schmuck with that strategy, you have to have some thinking ability but if you make those two assumptions about people and keep common sense that people change, and thank god that they do, but rarely. If you can blend those non-sequitors then you can do anything

brotha more than i thought anyone would bring 2 the table! thanks 4 that interesting thought

If you 'consciously' remind yourself of those two assumptions to make when meeting a 'new' person. Then life is your oyster, you can move through any social circle with that philosophy.
You have to have a core ethical and moral backbone and display it and stick to it.
But the problem I would face and recognized it given I was a cognitive researcher.
IS that I would make global statements after dealing with assholes that I would see a person that resembled them and start off with a different approach.

When I realized that I was not giving the same treatment to every person based on initial impressions and was surprised when I'd make nice people explain themselves more based on 'my perceptions'.
I realized, I had to change something.

I cant let assholes change the way I treat people.

I make those two assumptions and the next thing I know, I have overcome any doubt in my mind.

It can be criticized of course, but I think, no I believe that is true. If given the easiest path, people are essentially good and they want to help.

Now, believe me, I have also encountered people who you say 'two words to' and it unleashes 'ten years of grief' but you dont stop treating 95% of the population that dont have social interaction disorders like that with that philosophy.

Just dont fight the last war when you face a new person. It's a simple cognitive reminder

great philosophy to life by

I try to think people are good and can be trusted , but in reality it can be a different story.
With that said you meet all different sorts of people in life and really gotta take the good with bad and know thier are good people out there.
